UPV Student Research Stays

What is a research stay

In the case of doctoral students, a mobility consists of the development of a pre-doctoral research stay in an institution outside UPV, in order to complete one of the phases of the development of the thesis.

In all cases, the stay must have the prior approval of the thesis supervisor and the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program.

At the end of the mobility the student may request the recognition of the mobility as a specific activity.

The specific objectives of the mobility for Doctoral Students are:

  • Internationalization of the Researcher CV.
  • Encourage cooperation between institutions and enrich the research environment of the student and his group.
  • Contribute to the creation of a community of researchers.
  • Recognition of specific activities in the research plan.
  • Possibility of distinction in the doctoral degree (International Mention, Cotutela).

Apply for a research stay

A Pre-doctoral stay works in a different way to the mobility actions that are carried out in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. In this type of stay it is the doctoral student who assumes the responsibility of finding the destination (usually guided by the direction of his thesis or by those responsible for his doctoral program) and to obtain the approval of a researcher at the destination willing to supervise his stay.

Once it has been decided where, when and with whom the pre-doctoral stay will take place, the student must request the academic authorization for the pre-doctoral stay.

  1. Through the Thesis Management platform:Training Activities: Research Stay Application.
  1. It is necessary to attach a proof of acceptance from the host institution (it can be a letter, an e-mail, etc.) and a proposal of the work plan to be developed during the stay.
  1. It is necessary to state that you have medical assistance, civil liability and accident insurance covering the period of your stay.
  1. When the student has made the request, the thesis director can give his/her approval and then the CAPD can authorize the stay by accepting the request.

In addition, if the student has an employment relationship with the University (FPI/FPU/Val I+d grants, contracts for Works and Services,…), you must contact the UPV Human Resources Service and the service that manages your contract to communicate your absence and obtain the corresponding permissions.

Acknowledgment of stay

At the end of the pre-doctoral stay, the doctoral student will request the academic recognition of the stay for hours of specific activity (check the criteria of each program). This recognition will appear in the student’s transcript and will be valid to apply for the International Mention or the distinction of CoTutela at the time of the thesis defense (check the total requirements to be eligible for each one).

Recognition must be requested after the end of the stay.

  1. Through the Thesis Management platform:Training Activities: Specific Activities Register
  1. By entering the Pre-doctoral Stay in Thesis Management, the platform links to SENIA (the platform that manages the scientific production of UPV researchers).
  1. The deadline is open throughout the course.
  1. It is necessary to attach the proof of duration and a report (memory) of the activities carried out.
  1. The Thesis Director informs and proposes the recognition of the pre-doctoral stay as a specific activity in equivalent hours. The CAPD evaluates and awards the equivalent hours.

Once validated by the CAPD, the pre-doctoral stay will be registered in Thesis Management and will appear in the student’s file.
