Objectives

The main objective of the Doctoral Program in Languages, Literatures, Cultures and their Applications, which is offered jointly by the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Universitat de València, is to train PhDs in the field of Applied Linguistics. The aim is to train highly qualified researchers and professionals in the areas of knowledge related to philological studies, cultural studies and theoretical and applied linguistic studies. Specifically, the areas studied are:

  • Genres and specialty discourse; pragmalinguistics; terminology and translation; corpus linguistics; cognitive linguistics; natural language processing.
  • Second language teaching; language teaching and ICT; language learning assessment.
  • Analysis and design of recreational-educational tools; simulation and gaming and information and communication technologies; computer-assisted language learning; e-language learning; analysis and evaluation of web-based learning management systems.

Entry Profile

The recommended entry profile for those wishing to join this doctoral program would be summarized as having a solid humanistic background, in general, and a linguistic-literary background in particular. That is to say, advanced grammatical knowledge and competence in their own languages and at least one foreign language; in-depth knowledge of literatures, as well as the ability to analyze and interpret texts at different levels; interest in social and cultural phenomena; knowledge of other related areas of the Humanities will also be very useful. As a specific requirement: They must have completed one of the Master’s degrees associated with this doctoral program: Master’s Degree in Languages and Technology (UPV), Master’s Degree in Research in Languages and Literatures (UVEG), Master’s Degree in Linguistic Assessment and Literary Culture: Applications to the Valencian Context (UVEG), Master’s Degree in Creative and Humanistic Translation (UVEG). In case of being in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA), obtained in accordance with the provisions of the RD 778/98 or having achieved the Research Sufficiency as regulated by the RD 185/85, they must have studied it in Doctoral programs related to it. Profile of graduates

The graduate profile is Doctor in languages, literatures, cultures and their applications, specialized in one of the fields indicated in the objectives. Likewise, he/she has acquired skills in the interpretation and analysis of results and their dissemination through the writing and presentation of papers.

Specific requirements and criteria for admission to the program

The recommended admission profile for this doctoral program is summarized as having a solid humanistic background, in general, and a linguistic-literary background in particular. Advanced grammatical knowledge and proficiency in one of the native languages are required (in the case of foreign students, they will have to accredit a B2 level or higher); in-depth knowledge of literatures, as well as the ability to analyze and interpret texts at different levels; interest in social and cultural phenomena; knowledge of other related areas of the Humanities will also be very useful.

It is very important to have a critical spirit and a capacity for analytical reflection. Candidates must have a great capacity for autonomous work, as well as for the use of data research, bibliographic material and the use of computer tools.

He/she must be a person committed to society, who practices the values of a culture based on peace, respect and democratic values, gender equality, sustainable development and fundamental rights.

People who have completed other official national or foreign master’s degrees (with a minimum of 60 credits), which offer training to develop research of a research nature, will also be considered suitable:

  • Philology (in areas such as text editing, diachronic analysis of languages, onomastics, historical sociolinguistics, corpus analysis, technological applications for philological studies),
  • Literary and cultural (in areas such as literary history, comparative literature, literary genres, multiculturalism, gender studies),
  • Linguistics (in fields such as internal language studies, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, translation and interpretation, language teaching and learning, language industries).

On the other hand, we also include, among others, all those Postgraduate Programs offered by foreign Universities that have expressed their support to our program (see the section on Collaborations of the Verifica of this Doctoral Program), and also all those with which the University of Valencia has signed research, collaboration and co-supervision agreements, or may sign in the future, since the Doctoral Program aspires to the maximum internationalization of its research exchanges.

The body that will carry out the admission process is the Doctoral Academic Committee.

Access requirements

As a general requirement for access, candidates must be in one of the cases of article 6 of RD 99/2011 or of the second additional provision of said Royal Decree.

As a specific requirement:

  1. Suitable candidate profiles.
    Graduates of the above-mentioned master’s degrees associated with this doctoral program meet the ideal profile.
    Also those who have obtained, in accordance with the provisions of RD 778/98, the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA), or the Research Sufficiency, as regulated by RD 185/85, in related Doctorate programs.
  2. Other entry profiles.
    Those who have completed other national or foreign official master’s degrees, which offer training to develop the lines of research contemplated in this PhD program, will also be considered suitable.

Students who meet the above requirements will be admitted to the doctoral program, and the Academic Committee of the program will be in charge of verifying compliance with the above requirements for the admission of the doctoral candidate.

As admission criteria:

In order to assess the suitability of candidates, special consideration will be given to their academic record in relation to the lines of research they intend to develop, their professional experience, as well as their level of competence in one of their own languages (Spanish, Catalan). All the merits that the candidate alleges in his/her curriculum vitae must be accredited in documentary form and, if the Admissions Committee considers it appropriate, through a personal interview.

With respect to part-time doctoral studies, applicants must justify the reasons (work, family, personal…) for which they wish to use this modality. The change of modality in the realization of these doctoral studies will be approved by the CA in view of the modifications in the conditions alleged by the applicants.

The evaluation of merits to establish the order of priority for admission of students, both full-time and part-time, will be based on the following scale:

  • Academic record: 70%.

    • Extraordinary undergraduate or graduate degree award (5%).
    • Extraordinary master’s degree award (5%).
    • Completion of a second master’s degree (5%).

    • Professional experience in the field of the doctorate (5%).

Training complements

Those students who lack a sufficient technical or methodological background in the field of research in languages, literatures, cultures and their applications must take two compulsory modules of the Master’s Degree in Languages and Literatures of the Universitat de València, whose contents, learning outcomes, training activities and evaluation systems are as follows:

MODULE: ICT applied to research in languages and literatures (5 credits)

Contents

This is a module of 5 ECTS credits whose purpose is to work on a series of transversal competences that aims to train the student in complementary competences to those obtained in the other compulsory or optional subjects of the master’s degree that may be applicable to any of them. Specifically, it focuses on the acquisition of ICT skills, one of the central points in research training.

The contents that will be worked on may be of necessary application in the modules taken at a later date.

Regarding these contents, they should include aspects such as:

  • Computer applications for research in languages and literatures.
  • Management of databases and bibliographic search and information resources.
  • Digital editing and formatting of texts.
  • Laboratory work: technological resources for quantitative and qualitative research in philology.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Use fluently the computer applications necessary for research in languages and literatures.
  • Manage databases and other resources that allow them to locate the data and bibliography necessary for their research.
  • To be able to edit texts digitally, organizing them in the most convenient way in the field of research.

Training activities

Given the practical dimension of the module, teaching will take place in computer classrooms and laboratories. The training activities are divided into face-to-face activities (30% of the student workload, i.e. about 7.5 hours of the 25 hours we use as a measure of an ECTS) and non-face-to-face activities (70% of the student workload).

The former include classroom teaching (computer classroom and laboratory), which includes the general presentation of technological resources, their functionality and scope of application. These activities are based on teacher-student interaction (exposition, demonstration, practice, handling of media, etc.).

Within the framework of these activities, reduced tutorials are included to bring the student closer to those resources that may respond to his or her particular field of research interests in the future.

The non face-to-face activities will include individual or group work on the application of ICT to research in the philological field, and will follow the active work learning methodology through the autonomous search for resources and their application.

Evaluation systems

The module has an eminently practical dimension, consequently, the evaluation will consist of the monitoring of the formative activities that conform it and the capacity of response and initiative that the student will acquire throughout the course. Necessarily, these aspects will be the object of a continuous evaluation that will be complemented with the realization of a work in which the student will have to put into practice the knowledge and competences acquired in the use of ICT applied to the field of philological research.

MODULE: Techniques and methodologies in research: contexts (10 credits)

Contents

This is a 10-credit module. Its fundamental contents are based on the acquisition of techniques and methodologies that serve to contextualize the different objects of study both in their linguistic and literary aspects. The following contents may be included:

  • Theoretical foundations of Literary Studies.
  • Theoretical Foundations of Linguistics
  • Discourse analysis methodology
  • Cultural Criticism
  • Literature and society
  • Cultural Studies
  • Interculturality and linguistic mediation
  • Postcolonial debates
  • Field work techniques
  • Archiving techniques
  • Ethnographic approach

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • Apply the appropriate methodologies to carry out rigorous scientific research in languages and literatures.
  • Master the different techniques and methods of analysis and interpretation of complex texts, both formally and conceptually, related to language and literature.
  • Demonstrate the ability to locate, handle and synthesize specialized bibliographic information in the various languages and literatures under study, both in libraries and in physical or virtual archives.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of tools, programs and computer applications applied to research in languages and literatures.
  • Approach texts with scientific rigor and from diverse contextual perspectives.

Training activities

The training activities will be of two types:

  • Face-to-face activities: The activities will occupy between 20 and 25% of the student’s workload, i.e. between 5 and 6.5 hours of the 25 hours we use as a measure of an ECTS. These activities will consist of theoretical lectures (1 hour per week), large or small seminars with debates or presentation of work (1.5 hours per week) and tutorials.
    The development of these activities is based on the contents of the module and includes variants of contextual analysis at an advanced level from the perspective of Literary Studies and Linguistics. They are materialized from practices of corpus compilation techniques for future research, analysis of texts at an advanced level according to the different methods offered by these disciplines and with particular emphasis on their integral incorporation, comments that exercise critical skills around gender or ethnic discrimination, works that contemplate the management and assimilation of the recommended bibliography, practical cases that show the methodological approach to the texts, according to their time and medium of publication, etc.
  • Non-face-to-face activities: The student’s workload: will be between 80 and 75% of the student’s workload, i.e. between 20 and 18.5 hours. The student will have to work autonomously or in small groups in the search of bibliography, reading, preparation and elaboration of works, revision of the contents and activities seen in the face-to-face classes, as well as the realization of other activities in the same line of those previously proposed.

Evaluation systems

The evaluation will consist of the monitoring of the classroom teaching, of the non-classroom activities and of the autonomous work done by the student, in order to guarantee the acquisition of the established competences.

The theoretical assimilation of contents and their methodological application will also be assessed, since it contemplates the acquisition of conceptual and analytical strategies and this is foreseen in the training activities and in the general objectives of the degree. All these issues must be reflected, finally, in a monograph on any of the aspects seen in relation to the module or in a critical analysis work on them.
