News 2023

The Governing Council of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) approved in the last session of 2022, held on December 22, several points that affect current and future students. Thus, the executive body gave the green light to the launch of two new double degrees that will be in operation from the 2023-24 academic year. These are, on the one hand, the double Degree in Mathematics + Degree in Geomatics Engineering and Surveying; and, on the other hand, the double Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering + Master’s Degree in Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection.

With regard to the double degree, which offers fifteen vacancies in the inaugural year, a time structure has been defined that allows the 360 ECTS credits required to obtain the degree to be taken over five academic years. It also joins the four existing double degrees related to mathematical sciences (Mathematics + Civil Engineering, Mathematics + Telecommunications Technology and Services Engineering, Mathematics + Business Administration and Mathematics + Computer Engineering).

According to Marival Segarra, vice-rector for the Organization of Studies, Quality, Accreditation and Languages, these are degrees with a “high demand” that seek the “optimization of training itineraries”. In total, 75 places will be offered in these 5 double degrees.

In addition, the Governing Council approved the itinerary leading to the double Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and in Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection, with 156 credits, taking advantage of the synergies existing between the two degrees. The students who enroll -a maximum of ten in the inaugural course- will be able to study both degrees over five semesters.

“Recoveries” to raise grades

Another of the sections dealt with in the December 22nd session was the approval of the proposed modification of the Regulations for the Academic Regime and Evaluation of Students in official undergraduate and master’s degree studies at the UPV.

The most substantial novelty incorporated in the modification of these regulations is the option that allows students who so wish to attend the recovery acts of any subject in order to improve their final grade, even if they have passed the subject. This variation can begin to be implemented this year in those degrees “whose teaching guides allow it”, remarked the vice-rector of Students and Entrepreneurship of the UPV, Esther Gómez.

“With this measure we want to help students to improve their record in order to have more opportunities and, for example, more possibilities to choose a destination for an international scholarship, among other situations,” said Gómez.

Paul Lecoq, doctor honoris causa

At the same time, the Governing Council agreed to grant the appointment of doctor honoris causaby the UPV to physicist Paul Lecoq, PhD in Nuclear Physics. Since 1974, Lecoq has been working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, on five international particle physics experiments of great global relevance and impact. In addition, Lecoq was the technical coordinator of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at CERN, which played a relevant role in the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012.
