PhD in Art: Production and Research

Specific requirements and criteria for admission to the program

The Ph.D. program is organized, designed, coordinated and supervised by the Academic Committee (CAPD) responsible for its definition, updating and quality, as well as for training and research activities.

The number of new places offered per academic year is 40. The CAPD will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the criteria for admission to the program and will be responsible for its evaluation, taking into account the following aspects:

Academic qualifications: Spanish or foreign graduates with a Bachelor’s degree + Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Fine Arts, but also those with degrees in Audiovisual Communication, Design, Architecture, Computer Science, History of Art, Philosophy or related fields, are eligible for the program.

Academic transcript: both undergraduate and graduate academic records must be provided for evaluation by the CAPD.

For each non-Spanish qualification provided,it will be necessary to attach the corresponding “grade point average equivalence statement”.in accordance with the ministry of universities procedure.

In addition to meeting these requirements and having the general documentation required for pre-registration the following must be included in the platform specific documents:

  • Certificate of knowledge of Spanish level B2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in the case of students coming from countries with a non-official Spanish language.
    • In case the thesis is to be developed in English, a certificate of level must be provided together with the agreement of the director of the thesis.
  • Letter of endorsement signed by the thesis director (there is no model).
  • PDF with a previous proposal of the research plan, indicating title, abstract with a maximum of 500 words, table of contents and basic bibliography, with the approval of the director (there is no model).
  • PDF with a research publication of own or shared authorship. Text published or accepted in journals, conference proceedings, book, book chapter. With a minimum length of 2000 words and in one of the official languages of the State and/or English.

Selection process

From among the applications that meet the above requirements, a selection process will be carried out by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Art: Production and Research, according to the following two criteria:

  • Average grade point average of the undergraduate degree 40%.
  • Average grade of the official university master’s degree 60%.

The list of admissions will be made public taking into account the number of places offered.

This doctoral program will not open an extraordinary pre-enrollment period.

Training complements

The academic committee of the program, after studying the student’s curriculum, will decide whether the admission of the student may include the requirement of complementary training (depending on the student’s previous training).

These training complements will be the compulsory subjects of the Master’s Degree in Artistic Production: Project Methodology (4 credits), Keys to Contemporary Artistic Discourse (6 credits) and the Master’s Final Research Project (10 credits).

  • Ability to develop projects aimed at artistic production and research in the field of art.

  • Ability to document and manage artistic production, both their own and others in the field of cultural industries.
  • Ability to argue and communicate the values and meanings of one’s own artistic production.
  • Ability in the application of methodological and conceptual techniques that concern the field of artistic production and research.
