Prepare your stay

Prearrival instructions: Course enrollment, academic system and next steps

Medical insurance

You have two options for health care insurance:

OPTION 1: European Health Insurance Card-EHIC. This document will give you free access to the Spanish health system under the same conditions as a Spanish citizen.

The validity date of your TSE must be until the end of your stay.

OPTION 2: Certificate proving that you have private health care insurance in Spain until the end of your stay. The minimum requirements are:

1. (All): Medical expenses, min. 50,000 EUR in case of accident or illness (medical, pharmaceutical, hospitalization).
(Non-European students): Emergency transportation to the country of origin when necessary, minimum EUR 50,000.
(Non-European students): Transportation or repatriation of remains to the country of origin, minimum EUR 50,000.

The UPV has arranged a policy with the ONCAMPUS insurance company that meets the minimum requirements demanded by our University and to which you can adhere by paying the appropriate fees (“Oncampus Healthcare” insurance).

Accommodation

The UPVdoes not provide accommodation for exchange students. However, it is relatively easy to find accommodation at any time of the year in any of our 3 campuses (Valencia, Gandía and Alcoy).

Our student mentors and student associations such as ESN Valencia UPV (Erasmus Student Network) can provide assistance and guidance.

CAMPUS OF VALENCIA

– Accommodation in a shared apartment (apartment)

These are generally apartments with 2 to 4 bedrooms, with common areas. The price per room is between 300€ and 400€ depending on the area and the characteristics of the apartment.

The most popular neighborhoods among students are located in the northeast of the city, near the UPV campus: Avenida de Blasco Ibáñez, Plaza Xúquer, Cabañal / Cañamelar, Benimaclet, l’Amistat, Ayora or Ciutat Jardí.

We suggest that you do not limit your search exclusively to these neighborhoods. The UPV campus is well connected to other parts of the city by metro/tram, local EMT buses, as well as by a dense network of bike paths.

The longest EMT public bus ride from neighborhoods on the opposite side of the city (northwest or southwest districts) will take a maximum of 35-40 minutes. The trip will be faster if you use the metro/tram system or ride a bicycle.

These are the EMT lines (city buses) that arrive to the UPV campus in Valencia. Official information and routes:  EMT Geoportal

Accommodation in a university residence: University Residence o Colegio Mayor

A Residence Hall is like a student hotel, neutral in the type of people it houses and generally flexible in schedules and visits.

A “College”.The residence usually has an educational project for the residents in social, cultural, sporting or religious values. The rules on schedules or access to visitors in a college are usually more rigid than those of a university residence.

If you prefer to live in a student residence, it is important to book in advance, several months before the beginning of the semester. Some residences andSenior Colleges prefer students for the whole academic year rather than a semester. This depends on how full the student residence is.

The price is between 700 € and 1000 €/month, depending on the type of room (double, single, mini apartment) and the services included in the rate (only room and cleaning or also some meals).

The Residencia Universitaria Galileo Galilei is located within the UPV campus, but it is managed by a private company, not by the UPV. You will find the complete list of Residences and Halls of Residence on this website:  Residences and halls of residence | UPV – Universitat Politècnica de València

CAMPUS DE GANDÍA –Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandia (EPSG)

Gandia is divided into two main areas, the port/beach area (Grao de Gandia – Playa de Gandia) and the city center. Both parts of the city are connected by residential neighborhoods and bus lines.

There are two train stations in Gandía, served by the C1 commuter train line (RENFE Cercanías):

  • Gandía” train station: close to the old city center and further away from the UPV campus and the beach area.
  • Train station “Playa y Grao de Gandía / Platja i Grau de Gandia”: near the port and 10-15 minutes walk from the UPV campus.

Some trains on the C1 commuter rail line go directly to the beach train station / harbor train station, while others arrive at the main train station, next to the old city center.

There is a Shuttle bus between the RENFE train station in the center of the city of Gandía (station called “Gandía”) and the UPV campus.

The bus service is free of charge for UPV students under 30 years of age enrolled at the Gandía campus; the bus does not operate in the summer months of June, July or August, when there are no classes.

CAMPUS OF ALCOY – Polytechnic School of Alcoy (EPSA)

Mentor

The mentoring program is a very useful service for incoming students. A UPV student will help you with your needs before and during your stay.

A mentor can help you with tasks such as registration documents, finding accommodation, practicing Spanish, meeting you at the airport, getting around Valencia, getting to know the campus, adapting your schedule… and many other useful tips for day-to-day life.

You can apply for this program by completing your online application at AIRE and the Internationalization Service will assign you a student mentor.

Student mentors will receive a reward (extra points if they wish to apply for an exchange scholarship) if you evaluate them positively by filling out a survey at the end of their internship.

He can be your first friend in college!

– Longer writing time

– Sound shielding such as earplugs or earmuffs

– Using a computer to take an exam

Is your campus accessible for students in a wheelchair or who use other mobility aids?

Our three campuses (Valencia, Gandia, Alcoy) are quite accessible in the majority of common areas and services, as well as in lecture rooms.

Are there any lecture halls with hearing loops for students with hearing impairment?

Yes, but not in every School/Faculty and in every classroom. If UPV is informed well ahead of time, it can be arranged for a particular student.

How and when should an exchange student apply for support during his/her studies?

Students must contact the international office of their UPV host School/Faculty, minimum 2 months before arrival. The staff of the International Office of your host School/Faculty at UPV will contact the Unit for Support to Students with Disabilities and establish a link with the student.

What are the requirements or documents to be provided (medical documentation or certificates)?

  • Report or document describing the student’s disability, condition or impairment. The document must also contain specific details about pedagogical needs and adaptations required. If this assessment has already been performed and documented at the home institution, UPV will do its best to provide equivalent support.
  • Maximum 2 years old, in English or Spanish
  • Signed by a legitimate medical expert (doctor, psychologist, speech therapist, or staff working in Unit for Support to Students with Disabilities / Special Learning needs in the home university)

Will UPV cover all the costs ?

This is decided on a case-by-case basis. Students coming through the Erasmus+ programme and who have obtained additional Erasmus funds through their home university for students with disabilities will be expected to cover some costs from these funds in some cases: i.e. a sign language interpreter
