Description of the Internal Quality Assurance System

The Internal Quality Management System of the Official Degrees of the UPV (SIGCTi) is the set of planned and systematic actions necessary to guarantee the quality of the official teachings of the UPV, to ensure its control, review and continuous improvement. The SIGCTi includes the quality requirements defined in the state regulations on the organization of official education, as well as the criteria and guidelines of the regional, national and European agencies in the field of evaluation of university education.

  • SIGCTi includes actions related to:
  • The design of the training offer.
  • The development of teaching and other student-oriented activities.
  • The necessary academic and teaching support staff.
  • The necessary material resources and services.
  • Public information.
  • Continuous improvement of the official degrees of the UPV.

The SIGCTi is common to all degrees. Its managers are:

  • The Structure Responsible for the Degree (ERT): Doctoral School.
  • The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program.
  • The Quality Commission of the UPV (CC).
  • Other central bodies.

The SIGCTi design was certified by ANECA in 2010 under the AUDIT program.

To ensure the correct implementation and development of an official degree, the SIGCTi contemplates three levels of scope:

  • LEVEL 1: Definition and documentation of processes and procedures: University, ERT and Management Services, teaching support and R&D&I (the latter, within the framework of the Pegasus Program).
  • LEVEL 2: Monitoring of processes and procedures based on quantitative information (table of activity, performance and perception indicators) and qualitative information (system of suggestions, complaints and congratulations and external evaluation reports), as well as any other information that allows identifying areas for improvement.
  • LEVEL 3: Establishment of actions based on the results of monitoring (Level 2) that lead to the improvement of the degrees, thus closing the cycle of continuous improvement.

The Title Management Report

Annually, the SIGCTi provides the ERT and CA of the different doctoral programs with quantitative information in the so-called Degree Results Report including:

  • Level 1. Activity indicators (measured on theses enrolled in the previous year)
    • Total theses registered
    • Rate of theses developed with predoctoral support (FPI/FPU…)
    • Rate of professors who supervise theses registered in the active academic year
    • Weighted VAIP of thesis supervisors
    • Rate of professors with six years of active service
    • Rate of professors with active research projects/contracts
    • Rate of professors with active research projects/contracts and who are PIs.
    • Rate of theses with external directors
    • Rate of theses co-directed with external parties
    • Rate of international students
    • Rate of international thesis directors
  • Level 2. Performance indicators (measured on theses defended in the previous year)
    • Number of theses defended in the program
    • Abandonment rate
    • Yield rate (graduation)
    • Efficiency level
    • Average number of scientific contributions per thesis
    • Rate of theses with research stays
    • Average duration of mobility stays
    • Rate of theses developed under co-supervision
    • Rate of theses with International Mention
    • Rate of theses with Industrial Mention
    • Rate of theses proposed for the Extraordinary Prize
    • Cum Laude thesis rate
    • Rate of thesis with external evaluators or with members of an international tribunal.
  • Level 3. Satisfaction indicators
    • Average faculty satisfaction with the management of the degree program
    • Average student satisfaction with the management of the degree program
    • Average graduate satisfaction

At the same time, the ERTs and CAPDs have qualitative information:

  • Suggestions, complaints and compliments: through the SQF System management application.
  • External evaluation reports (verification, monitoring and accreditation): in the Reports section of the degree websites.

Based on the results report, the qualitative information and any other information that allows identifying areas for improvement, the CAPD prepares the doctoral program Management Report, which includes:

  • The composition of the CAPD.
  • Report of results, analysis of results and compliance with established goals.
  • Qualitative analysis of the functioning of the degree: strengths and weaknesses.
  • Analysis of external evaluation reports. Suggestions, complaints and compliments received.
  • The results of the implementation of the improvements.

The Title Management Report provides the following output information:

  • Definition of objectives and goals of the degree.
  • Actions to improve the degree based on the analysis of the information.

The Management Report of the doctoral program is approved by the ERT through its collegiate bodies and sent to the CC for review. Both the Management Report and the result of the review by the CC are made public in the Reports section of the Doctoral School’s website for each Program.

The SIGCTi System is documented in the Quality Manual. The preparation, revision and updating of this manual is the responsibility of the Evaluation, Planning and Quality Service and its approval by the CC of the UPV.
