Welcome to the website of the Department of Computer Engineering (DISCA). DISCA was born from the division of the old Department of Systems Engineering, Computers and Automation. The disappeared Department was established in 1986, thanks to the first statutes of the UPV. It covered two areas of knowledge: Computer Architecture and Technology (ATC) and Systems Engineering and Automation (ISA). Since January 1998, when the division took place, DISCA has been the responsible, within the departmental structure of the UPV, for organizing and developing the research and the teaching in the Computer Architecture and Technology area.

ATC’s thematic contents are relatively broad, covering all aspects related to the design, analysis, implementation, evaluation, and control of computer hardware. In other words, ATC area covers the following large thematic blocks:

  • Computer instructions sets and their implementation through functional units.
  • Computer architectures and their evaluation, to optimize their resources and improve their performance.
  • Auxiliary devices and peripherals, which provide access to external resources, considering their technology, structure, and utilization.
  • Communications networks, including both the physical devices that make possible computers interconnection and the protocols that coordinate this communication.
  • Structure and implementation of Operating Systems, which provides proper management of all computer resources.
  • Application of computers and microprocessors to real-time systems, embedded systems and IoT.
  • Organization and coordination of systems with multiple processing units.
  • Computer component technology, understanding by “components” all physical or logical elements that provide computational capacity.
  • Reliability of computer components, considering both physical and logical devices.

In addition, DISCA also teaches in the area of Aerospace Engineering. The headquarters of the Department are in the 1G building of the School of Informatics. There is also a nucleus of staff at the Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoi (EPSA). At present, DISCA teaches diverse Degrees and Masters from different centres of the UPV. In addition, it also organizes the Master’s Degree in Computer and Network Engineering.

Among its members, DISCA has researchers of recognized national and international prestige, together with leading research groups, such as the Parallel Architectures Group (GAP) and the Computer Networks Group (GRC).
