II International Congress on Moors and Christians Festivities

Gandia Campus.

Deadline for submission of papers is May 31st.
Event dates: June 28-30, 2024

The 2nd International Congress on the Festivals of Moors and Christians, organized by the National Union of Festival Entities (UNDEF), will be held from June 28 to 30 at the Gandia campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). The main objective of this event is to study the Moors and Christians festivals in their multiple dimensions, understanding them as a social, cultural, artistic, tourist, and economic phenomenon.

This second edition of the congress follows the 6th National Congress and 1st International Congress on Moors and Christians Festivals held in 2016. The committee responsible for scientific management is coordinated by UPV professor Daniel Catalá Pérez, who states, “This is the second International Congress on the Festivals of Moors and Christians, one of the most deeply rooted popular festivals in the Valencian Community, but present, in its different forms, on five continents.”

The origins of the festivals, gunpowder as a key element in the representations, festive music, religiosity, the role of women in the festivals… “these topics can be supplemented by others of concern to a large number of experts in various disciplines who apply their expertise to the study of the festival. For example, the delicate balance between tradition and spectacle in the current evolution of many festive manifestations, the necessary professionalization of the management of organizing entities, festivals as a factor of social cohesion, or their playful and popular character.”
