In Theory of Digital Dependency (2026), Argentine economist Cecilia Rikap analyzes the current digital economy, which is governed by the intellectual monopolies of large technology companies that have the ability to control the pace of production and appropriate the knowledge produced by the rest of the world. Rikap rigorously examines the legal, political, and economic mechanisms through which giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google turn companies and startups, public agencies, and universities as extensions of their own laboratories. For her part, Chilean-Spanish legal scholar Valeska David (currently affiliated with the World Bank) will analyze certain aspects of current geopolitical crises, threats to democracies, and the future of international law. She will also share experiences that demonstrate how international law can be reimagined and adapted to a new definition of the role of human rights, equality, intersectionality, and environmental stewardship.
