Thanks to the PAC 2020 (Cultural Action Proposals) of the Culture Area of the UPV, on November 21, 2020, nest boxes for passerine birds were installed in different locations of the Vera campus of the UPV.
The campus offers a favorable environment for the nesting of numerous species, some of them with special conservation needs, and the placement of this type of boxes favors the populations of these small birds. During the day, a total of 19 nesting boxes were installed in different locations of the campus that had suitable qualities for the breeding of passerines and that, in addition, some of them can be observed with the naked eye.
The activity, organized by Professor Pedro Llovera (Department of Electrical Engineering), counted with the participation of researcher Victor Gallego (Department of Animal Science) and Javier Garcia-Gans, an expert ornithologist from the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO), who will complete this activity with an on-line talk on birds on campus on December 15. In addition, while the nest-boxes were being placed, a scientific bird banding activity was carried out during which different species of resident and wintering birds were captured.
We hope that this initiative will fill our campus with winged companions and that we will all benefit from their presence, their songs and their contribution to the environmental balance.
