The Industrial Doctorate Mention

Industrial Doctorate is understood as the thesis developed within a company (private sector company or public sector or Public Administration) in any area of ​​knowledge, developing an industrial research or experimental development project. It aims to encourage research in the business sector and the participation of the industry in doctoral programs, encourage the transfer of knowledge between the university and its environment, and promote the labor insertion of young researchers.

The Spanish PhD national regulation (RD 99/2011) states that the mention "Industrial Doctorate" will be granted whenever the following circumstances concur:

  1. The existence of a labor or commercial contract with the doctoral student. The contract may be concluded by a private sector or public sector company, as well as by a Public Administration.
  2. The doctoral student must participate in an industrial research or experimental development project developed in the company or Public Administration in which the service is provided, which can not be a University. The project of industrial research or experimental development in which the doctoral student participates must have a direct relationship with the thesis that he / she carries out. This direct relationship will be accredited by means of a report that will have to be approved by the University.
  3. In the event that the industrial research or experimental development project is executed in collaboration between the University and the company or Public Administration in which the doctoral student serves, a framework collaboration agreement between the parties will be signed. In this agreement will be indicated the obligations of the University and the obligations of the company or Public Administration, as well as the selection procedure of the doctoral student.
  4. The doctoral student will have a thesis tutor appointed by the University and a person designated by the company or Public Administration, who may be, if applicable, Director of the thesis in accordance with the regulations of the Doctorate.


Admission and registration
The student will proceed to apply for admission to the doctoral program following the usual procedure of pre-registration of the UPV.

Then complete the following form and send it to doctoradoindustrial@upv.es along with the following documentation:

  • Evidence of the student's contracting
  • Report of the industrial research or experimental development project, signed by the Academic Committee of the doctoral programme.
  • CV of the supervisor (or director of the thesis) in the company
  • Collaboration agreement between the company and UPV (if required)
  • Letter of commitment of the company


This documentation will be reviewed by the Doctoral School.

The Academic Committee of the doctoral program will study said application for admission and will solve it according to the criteria of the Program, taking into account the feasibility of the research project presented.

Once the admission is formalized, the student will complete his / her enrollment in the doctoral program of the UPV.

Supervision and Direction of the Thesis
A supervisor of the research project in the company must be identified. This supervisor may be the Director of the thesis if he meets the necessary requirements (any Spanish or foreign Doctor, with accredited research experience, regardless of the University, center or institution in which he provides his services). The Academic Committee of the program will study the curriculum of the supervisor in the company and decide on its suitability as director of the thesis.

In the event that the supervisor in the company finally acts as Director, a tutor or a co-director of the UPV will be required. When the supervisor in the company does not act as director of the thesis a director of the UPV will be required.

Necessity of agreement between the company and UPV
In the event that the industrial research or experimental development project is carried out in collaboration between the University and the company / Administration in which the doctoral student (with a director or co-director of the UPV) serves, an agreement will be signed. of collaboration between the parties. In this agreement will indicate the obligations of the University and the obligations of the company or Public Administration, as well as the selection procedure of the doctorate (Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, which regulates the official doctorate teachings ). The agreement will be in force throughout the development of the thesis.

When the direction of the thesis rests solely with a doctor (s) of the company, no collaboration agreement will be required, and the tutor of the UPV will be responsible for ensuring the adequacy of the work developed in the doctoral thesis and the training of the doctoral student. the requirements established in the Doctoral Program.

Development of the thesis
The student, under the supervision of his / her thesis director, will carry out the activities included in the report of the research project, adjusting to the conditions set in the collaboration agreement, if any, requiring the validation of his / her work by the director or director of the thesis and by the tutor. In addition, the student must complete all the processes and academic requirements established in the verification report of the doctoral program to complete his thesis.

If not done in the admission and enrollment process, the doctoral student may request that his / her thesis choose the Industrial Doctorate mention at the latest at the time of requesting the approval of his Research Plan (before the end of the first year since his / her registration ), having to provide the following documentation in a single pdf file:

Evidence of the student's contracting
Report of the industrial research or experimental development project
CV of the supervisor (or director of the thesis) in the company
Collaboration agreement between the company and UPV (if required)
Letter of commitment of the company

Financing
The contract of the PhD student may be financed totally or partially by concurrence to the different calls.
