The back of the PhD certificate may be awarded with the words "International Doctorate" if the following conditions are met:

  1. That during the training period for the doctorate, the student completed a minimum visit of three months outside Spain studying or conducting research at an institution of higher education or prestigious research centre. The visit and activities must be endorsed by the supervisor and approved by the academic committee, and incorporated into the document describing the doctoral activities of the student.
  2. That part of the doctoral thesis, at least the summary and conclusions, is written and presented in one of the common languages for scientific communication in the field of knowledge, and not Spanish or another official language in Spain. Thesis under a international Co-Tutelle Agreement

According to RD 99/2011, the back of the PhD certificate shall include the information "Co-tutored thesis with University U", when the following conditions are met:

  1. The doctoral thesis has been supervised by two or more doctors from two universities, a Spanish university and a foreign one, as formalised in a co-tutorship agreement.
  2. During the training period required to obtain the PhD, the student must have spent at least six months at the institution with which the co-tutorship agreement was established, doing research work, in either a single period or several periods. Placements and activities shall be listed in the co-tutorship agreement.

Universitat Politècnica de València has two types of regimes for co-tutored theses:

  • "Co-tutorship or Co-supervision of theses by professors at foreign institutions". It is the most usual type. In these cases, students only officially enrol with UPV and consequently may only obtain the UPV degree (there is no official link of the student with the foreign university). In addition to his UPV thesis director, students must have a co-supervisor at the foreign university.
  • "Co-tutored Double PhDs". In these cases, cotutela is the framework for developing a thesis in parallel at two universities. The process concludes with a single defence at either institution. If successful, a doctorate will be conferred by each university (it is not a joint qualification). In these cases the doctoral student is an official student of both universities. Students must satisfy the admission requirements and thesis development, evaluation and defence requirements at both universities. Students must be registered at both universities for the entire duration of the doctorate, have a director at each institution and they must stay at each university for at least one year.

The Co-Tutelle agreement with double degree will be negotiated prior to the beginning of the thesis or, at the latest, during the first year of development of the thesis.

Conditions of the research stay:

The stay may have been carried out in one or several periods, with a minimum duration of one month each, always in the institution of the co-director of the thesis, who will carry out the supervision.
