UPV’s carbon footprint in 2021

The UPV registered its carbon footprint (CF) for 2021 on November 8, 2022 and the data has been recently updated in the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge website. The latest figures consolidate the downward trend of the institution’s CF and reveal some significant data.

The UPV has registered its CF since 2014. To this end, the Environmental Office. The first step is to use the ‘Carbon footprint of an organization. Scope 1+2’ calculator and, subsequently, the prescriptive Reduction plan and follow-up reports which include both the CF reduction measures proposed in the previous year and the reduction targets for the following year. The registered CF must then be verified, a process that the UPV achieves without any further formalities thanks to the EMAS environmental management seal, which guarantees, through its periodic audits, the validity of the data and calculations recorded.

In addition, when an organization demonstrates continued progress in reducing its CF, it obtains the ‘CALCULATE+REDUCE’ seal. Thus, the UPV obtained the ‘CALCULATE’ seal in 2014 and the ‘CALCULATE+REDUCE’ seal in 2018.

The 2021 CF data reinforce the excellent environmental management of the UPV:

The UPV is the only Spanish public university with the European EMAS environmental management certificate (since 2009).

The UPV was the first Spanish public university to register its carbon footprint in 2014.

The UPV was the first Spanish public university to obtain the ‘CALCULATE+REDUCE’ seal in 2018.

The UPV is the public university with the lowest verified carbon footprint per person in 2021
