The Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria Informàtica (ETSINF) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) organizes, one more year, the month of the environment, a consolidated initiative since 2018 that close to raise awareness among the university community sustainability, responsible management of resources and technological impact on the environment. This proposal forms part of the strategy of the School Environmental Committee created to promote good environmental practices and evaluate improvement actions in the center.
Throughout the month, different activities will be developed, especially aimed at students with a special interest in pedagogical and awareness objective combining playful dynamics with formative contents.
Activities
During the whole month of November (from November 4 to 29) there will be an exhibition in espai.inf, in building 1E, on loan from TESO, about ICT Cooperation in African countries.
The Delegation of Students (DEETSINF) has foreseen several proposals distributed throughout the school buildings:
- The November 19 there will be thematic roulette about the environment with gifts from 10.30 to 11:30h and from 14.00 to 15.00 in the Hall of 1G.
- The November 20 there will be a video game tournament and a mini soccer tournament from 12.30 to 15.00 in rooms 1.1 and 1.2 of 1G.
- The week of november 24there will be an environmental scavenger hunt among the different buildings of the ETSINF.
- During the whole month of November: competition to collect tokens to give at the end of the month. They can be picked up at the Student Delegation from 10 am to 4 pm.
Information stands EMTREduca and Proluo
On november (building 1G) i November 25th (building 1E) the educational program EMTREduca will set up information booths during the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 4 p.m. with the objective of promoting habits of prevention, reduction and correct waste separation.
The November 25 the Proluo Group of Generació Espontània presents from 10.00 to 13:30h at the hall of 1G its microplastics cleaning project at sea.
Awareness-raising workshops
Three lectures are scheduled to be given by:
- The NGO TeSo (Tecnologies Solidàries) will give a lecture with the title “Recuperació, Reparació i Reutilització, casos pràctics”. the 20/11/25 from 12.00 to 12:30h in the classroom Aula 1E 2.2, a space provided by Professor Plans Gascó. This organization has a stable agreement with the School related to the reuse of computer equipment. You can see here the donated equipment
- The Generació Espontània group Proluo imparts the lecture “Back to Blue, un pas més prop de cuidar la nostra mar” el 25/11/25 from 16.00 to 16:30h in the Lab 1B 0.2 Richard Stallman, space provided by professor Ángeles Calduch.
- The Àrea de Medi Ambient de la UPV imparts the lecture: “The problem of waste. Waste management of electrical and electronic devices.” the 27/11/25 d’11.30 a 12:30h a l’aula Aula 1B I2, space provided by Professor Manuela Albert.
- Also the 27/11/25 the professor Juan Vicente Oltra will give a lecture on the ETSINF collaboration in DANA in espai.inf at 12:30h.
These talks address issues such as sustainability in computing, environmental impacts and responsible design strategies.
Recycling and circular economy
The Computer Museum organizes the 13/11/25 a special collection event of RAEE (Residues of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) on the occasion of the Environmental Month, at 12.30 p.m. in the Hall of the building 1G (ETSINF).
The RAEE are wastes from any appliance that works with batteries or plugs. By recycling them correctly we avoid pollution and recover valuable materials.
You can bring it to the Museum’s stand:
- Speakers
- Headphones
- Batteries and charger
- Cables and chargers
- CDs and DVDs
- small printers
- Memory sticks / USB
- Microphones and small household appliances
- Mobiles
- Computers and screens
- Hair dryers and irons
- Toaster
- Webcams
(In general, any old electronic device that no longer works or is in disuse).
Important: Only domestic RAEE or very large RAEE (not refrigerators, renters, etc.)
We invite you to take advantage of this opportunity to clean your garbage bins and give this waste a proper treatment. Every contribution counts towards a more sustainable ETSINF!
ETSINF maintained a permanent workshop for the reuse of computer equipment where volunteer students recondition computers and peripherals destined for donation to schools, associations and NGOs, reducing the generation of electronic waste. Since 2014 we have recovered more than 500 equips for social purposes.
The school also has at its disposal Punts Verds for the deposit of batteries, light bulbs, small WEEE and computer consumables in buildings.1E i 1G.
Environmental management at UPV
These actions are in line with the institutional environmental commitment contained in the European EMAS Regulation and the certification ISO 14001 renewed in 2024 through an update of the UPV Environmental Policy.
Student participation
Students can contribute in different ways:
- Making responsible use of facilities and resources (turning off lights, monitors, air conditioning, etc.).
- Participant in activities and proposals of the Environmental Committee.
- Sending suggestions to: cmedioambiental@inf.upv.es
- Joining as a volunteer in the reuse workshop (afternoons from 15-19h).
These hours can validate for credits prior certification from the school.
You can also prove your involvement in the care of the environment with this TEST
How can we contribute from IT?
From ETSINF, we want to inspire the entire university community to be an active part of the change with actions such as:
Prolonging the life of electronic devices Using our equipment responsibly, repairing it whenever possible and recycling it properly can significantly reduce the amount of electronic waste. In addition, simple actions such as optimizing the performance of our computers or unplugging unused devices contribute to significant energy savings.
Code optimization and energy efficiency Efficiency in program design and scheduling also has a direct impact on energy consumption. Efficient programming reduces the demand of the systems and, therefore, the energy consumption. From ETSINF, we encourage our students to always keep this approach in mind in their projects and research work.
Technological innovation for sustainability: Technology can be a great ally in mitigating climate change. Today, tools such as artificial intelligence and the analysis of large volumes of data are helping to optimize energy systems, better manage natural resources, and predict natural disasters. Computing plays a key role in the fight for a more sustainable planet.
During this Environmental Month, we encourage you to actively participate in the activities scheduled. We also invite you to reflect on the role that each of us has in creating a future where technology and sustainability go hand in hand.
The environmental month is an opportunity to think about the impact of technology on the environment and to propose solutions that contribute to a more sustainable development. At a time when technology is present in all aspects of our lives, it is essential to question how our actions in the computer field can influence the preservation of the planet.
