A coffee with… Rosa Porcel

We talked to Rosa Porcel, professor at the ETSEAMN, new deputy director of the “Communication and Society” Area, deputy director of the IBMCP (Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants)  and one of the leading science communicators.

  • Good morning, first of all we would like to get to know you better so we ask you to introduce yourself to your colleagues, who is Rosa Porcel?

A teacher and researcher, who enjoys science and shares her passion. I am a doctor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, born in Granada and Valencian by adoption. After more than 15 years at the CSIC, I have finally joined the UPV in 2021 as a professor..

I like to share what I learn so,I have also been a science communicator for 12 years. using different media and trying to reach all audiences.Lately through books.

I defend the idea that “what does not count, does not count”.

  • What tasks will you carry out in the new ETSEAMN management?

I am the Deputy Director of“Communication and Society. I am in charge of communication and activities that involve bringing the School closer to society.I defend the idea that “what doesn’t count, doesn’t count”, So I want to let the public know, among other things, the reasons why our School is the second best option nationally to study several of our degrees and is among the top 50 in the world according to the most prestigious rankings.

We are fortunate to have an extraordinary Escuela Técnica Superior thanks to our staff (PDI and PAS), student body, facilities and activities carried out.Basically I am responsible for the corporate image and communication strategy of ETSEAMN.

We have been active for more than 50 years and I think we should have a more prominent role in the media and public presence.

  • What is the impact of ETSEIAMN on Valencian society?

I think less than I should. In fact, one of the objectives of my term of office will be to increase it, and to make the School present not only in issues related to our degrees, but also in relevant events for the Valencian society.

We have been active for more than 50 years and I think we should have a more prominent role in the media and public presence.. I would like many more people to know what ETSEAMN is and what it does for everyone.

Just as a scientist is continually challenged, my challenge as a teacher is each and every student.:each student is a project to work on.

  • Currently, what is your biggest challenge at the professional level?

As a scientist, obtain funding and achieve high impact publications and patents.Just as a scientist is continually challenged, my challenge as a teacher is each and every student.:each student is a project to work on.

Also, as I have already mentioned, I like to let society know what we do, what we discover and how we can help solve problems and improve Life.

I investigate the relationship of plants with certain microorganisms such as mycorrhizae that allow them to better tolerate drought and other stresses.

In this sense, I like to say that my work consists of developing more productive plants under drought conditions.Specifically, I research the relationship of plants with certain microorganisms such as mycorrhizae that allow them to better tolerate drought among other stresses. That’s my little bit of sand trying to get food for all in a world situation of water scarcity.

  • Going into a more personal and relaxed side, what motto or phrase inspires you?

“The intelligence seeks and the heart finds.” George Sand.

Rosa Porcel won the Prismas Prize for the Best Published Book for “That wasn’t in my Botany book.”.
  • Will Elon Musk kill Twitter or will the opposite happen?

The opposite is that Twitter will do away with it? Hehehe. The RRSS have had and still have a lot of importance. The success or failure will depend on our use and the particular universe we create in them: if it is based on respect, rigor or fun, Twitter will continue in spite of its owner. If, on the other hand, it fosters hatred and extremism, hoaxes or the whims of its owner, there will be no room for sensible people..

  • If Twitter disappears, will you switch to Mastodon?

I’m already in Mastodon… just in case.

  • Pizza, with or without pineapple?

Not my type, butwhy shut me down? I have eaten a rice with chorizo, Zamorano-style rice, which takes your breath away.

  • In winter, socks to sleep in?

Without hesitation. And over pajamas.

  • Vacations, sea or mountain?

When you have both, as I do, being from Granada, I don’t have to choose.

  • Finally, coffee, black or with milk?

Always accompanied.
