SONARTE: Science, Music and Lutherie in Gandia

How does physics influence the sound of a violin? What role do materials play in the construction of a guitar? Can scientific research help improve a musical instrument? These are some of the questions that will be explored by SONARTE: Science and Lutherie in Dialogue, an initiative promoted by the Gandia Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) that invites participants to discover the connections between science, technology, music and craftsmanship. The project is funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

SONARTE was created with the aim of bringing scientific, technological and innovation culture closer to society, particularly students, teachers, music professionals and anyone interested in learning how musical instruments are built and studied from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The initiative is led by Rubén Picó, a researcher at the Gandia Campus and specialist in musical acoustics, together with a team of researchers and technical staff from the Universitat Politècnica de València, Universitat de València, the Conservatory of Music of Valencia, and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. It also includes the participation of highly respected luthiers from Valencia, Barcelona and Cremona (Italy), a city internationally renowned for its tradition of instrument making.

With SONARTE, the Gandia Campus promotes a different way of communicating science by connecting it with one of the most deeply rooted cultural expressions of our region: music. The initiative aims to become a meeting point for researchers, students, musicians, luthiers and the general public, showing how scientific knowledge can enrich artistic creation and open new opportunities for learning and innovation.

All activities are free of charge, but prior registration is required depending on the target audience. If you are passionate about music, science, or simply curious about what happens inside a musical instrument when it begins to sound, SONARTE offers a unique opportunity to explore that fascinating space where research and art come together.
