The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has launched PoliCar, a new exclusive car-sharing service for the entire university community. The initiative is part of the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Mobility 2023-2027 whose main objective is to promote more sustainable commuting to campus and reduce the use of private vehicles when there are no viable alternatives.
Despite the progress achieved in the promotion of public transport and active mobility, part of the UPV student body and staff continue to travel by car for reasons of distance, timetables or lack of adequate connections. The mobility diagnosis carried out by the university also indicates that the occupancy rate of these vehicles is only 1.2 people per car, a figure that reflects a wide margin for improvement.
With the launch of PoliCar, the UPV offers for the first time a structured carpooling system that allows those who use their car to also contribute to the sustainability of the campus. Through the app TRIBBU, which incorporates an exclusive section for users registered with UPV mail, the drivers receive financial compensation 0.04 €/km for each passenger transported through the energy bonds of the Ministry for Ecological Transition. To illustrate: someone commuting daily from a municipality 25 km from the campus can receive around €40 per month.
In addition,UPV subsidizes with €1 per trip for the first 2,000 trips made by passengers. This will facilitate the start-up of the service and encourage people to try this sustainable alternative.
The initiative, managed by the Environment Unit will enable the university accurately measure the reduction of Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with daily commuting to campusesthanks to the data available in the application itself.
With PoliCar, the UPV reinforces its commitment to a more efficient, economical and environmentally friendly university mobility, and encourages the entire community to spread and use this new service.
