The Governing Council of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) approved in its session of April 30, 2026 the Environmental Statement for the year 2025 and the Environmental Plan 2026These two key documents reflect the university’s commitment to the continuous improvement of its environmental performance and the integration of sustainability into the management of its campuses.
Environmental Statement 2025
The Environmental Statement 2025 includes the main environmental performance indicators. The document evaluates aspects such as energy and water consumption, waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions, mobility, green public procurement and the environmentalization of teaching. This document is part of the university’s certified environmental management system and has been verified by an independent external entity.
Among the most noteworthy data, the Environmental Statement shows a downward trend in the institutional carbon footprint, which in 2025 stood at 3,256 tons of CO₂ equivalent, compared to much higher values recorded a decade earlier. The UPV also maintains its carbon footprint registered in the official registry of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and continues to advance in the methodological validation of Scope 3 calculations.
In terms of regulatory compliance, the UPV has an environmental legislation database which includes; 188 applicable legal provisions with 819 requirements identified. The institution’s environmental control and monitoring system is rigorous, as are the corresponding authorisations and permits in areas such as waste, discharges, atmospheric emissions and water concessions.
Environmental Plan 2026
In addition to the Environmental Statement, the Governing Council approved the Environmental Plan 2026, which defines the objectives, goals, responsibilities and deadlines to continue advancing in the sustainability of the university campuses. The plan has been prepared taking into account the UPV’s environmental policy, significant environmental aspects, legal requirements, identified risks and opportunities, and proposals made by the university community through the Environmental Commission.
Among the main objectives of the 2026 Environmental Plan highlight the increase in photovoltaic solar energy installationswith new plants on the Vera and Gandia campuses; the improving the energy efficiency of several buildingsby renovating air conditioning systems, boilers and carpentry; and the digitalization of the drinking water network of the Vera campusThe company has incorporated telemetered meters to optimize the management of the resource.
The plan also contemplates actions for improving water consumption efficiency to reinforce the selective collection of waste similar to urban waste, including the installation of new garbage cans and filling sensors in containers, advances in the carbon footprint reduction and offsetting of scopes 1 and 2, and continuing to promote sustainable mobility. The objective is to achieve 80% compliance with the UPV’s Strategic Plan for Sustainable Mobility (2023-2027).
With the approval of these documents, the UPV consolidates its environmental management system and strengthens its role as a university committed to sustainability, transparency and continuous improvementaligning its teaching, research and management activities with current environmental challenges and the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
