The 2014 QS subject ranking, a global benchmark, places the UPV among the world's top 200 universities in eight disciplines

The prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject 2014, one of the main global benchmarks for higher education, has placed the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) among the top 200 higher education institutions in the world in a total of eight disciplines.

Thus, the UPV, despite seeing its public funding reduced year after year, not only remains, in the 2014 QS ranking, among the world’s top 100 universities in Agriculture and Forestry and in Statistics and Operational Research, among the top 150 in three other disciplines (Chemical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, and Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering) and among the top 200 in Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering; in addition to that, now for the first time the UPV appears in the latter group in two more subjects: Mathematics, and Materials Sciences.

The best technological university in Spain

The UPV's success as regards its results in the QS rankings by subject must be added to its recognition by the other two main global gauges of higher education quality, namely Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking.

In fact, the UPV is the only Spanish technological university to appear in the latest(August 2013) ARWU ranking of the top 500 universities in the world, and also the first Spanish polytechnic university among the top 100 universities in the world which are less than 50 years old, according to THE 100 Under 50 ranking.

Therefore, the UPV is Spain's only technological university to be listed on the three major global rankings of higher education quality, and its global leadership position bears witness to the quality of a university that, in spite of how education and research are being affected by the current economic situation, keeps constantly improving

More than 3.000 higher education institutions analyzed

The ranking, developed by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), evaluates the universities’ performance in five broad areas of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.

In order to prepare this ranking, QS analyzes different parameters regarding the universities’ scientific output, their prestige in both the academic and the business worlds, their international presence and their teaching commitment. Of the more than 20.000 universities existing in the world, the QS ranking in this fourth edition analyzed more than 3.000 higher education institutions, and rated a total of 689.

Francisco Mora: "The UPV's numbers are very good"

"The QS ranking has very good numbers for the UPV", said the rector of the UPV, Francisco Mora, who is pleased at these results. He also stressed the UPV’s improvement "despite the reductions on public funding for research that we are suffering" -a fact which is particularly significant if one takes into account that this ranking "focuses on research parameters".

According to the head of the UPV, this achievement "shows that the UPV researchers are working harder than ever, and are being much more innovative and creative in their jobs, as they now have less means and resources at their disposal than they did in previous years."

"We have ranked in more disciplines among the top 200 universities in the world, and the overall level of the UPV has improved". This, as pointed out by the rector himself, "confirms that the UPV is definitely the best technological university in Spain and one of the foremost in the European continent."
