The July 2, 2026, the Master’s Degree in Electronic Systems Engineering (MUISE) The Polytechnic University of Valencia held another professional seminar in collaboration with Power Electronics, a leading international company in the development of solutions for energy conversion, storage, and the integration of renewable energy. The workshop was led by Llorenç Latorre, head of the Power Hardware R&D department, and Consuelo Gómez-Zarzuela, University Relations Manager, who introduced the students to the technological and professional realities of one of the fastest-growing sectors in electronic engineering.
During the seminar, an overview of the design of electronic power converters intended for use in solar photovoltaic, energy storage, and electric mobility applications. The speakers demonstrated how this equipment forms the technological core of the energy transition, enabling the transformation and management of energy with high levels of efficiency, reliability, and quality of supply.
One of the main segments of the session was devoted to the study of the Behavior of Power Semiconductors and their impact on the overall performance of converters. Aspects related to conduction and switching losses, heat dissipation mechanisms, and device selection criteria were analyzed, highlighting the importance of understanding the physical behavior of these components in order to develop robust and highly efficient systems.
In addition, the seminar explored the switching and control strategies used in modern converters, demonstrating how design decisions affect both energy efficiency and system reliability. Through examples drawn from the company’s real-world projects, students gained insight into the industrial product development process, from the early design phases to the validation and optimization of equipment intended to operate under demanding conditions.
In addition to the strictly technical content, the session gave attendees insight into how a department Industrial R&D, the professional profiles currently in demand in the sector, and the skills most highly valued for joining leading technology companies. The participation of Consuelo Gómez-Zarzuela It provided an opportunity to present collaboration opportunities between the company and the university, as well as possibilities for internships, master’s thesis projects, and job placement for future engineers.
The closing discussion sparked an interesting exchange of ideas between the students and the speakers, who answered numerous questions related to converter design, the evolution of semiconductor devices, and the technological challenges associated with electrification and energy storage. This direct contact with professionals who develop cutting-edge solutions provides a particularly valuable opportunity to complement academic training with a perspective clearly oriented toward professional practice.
From the academic administration of the MUISE We would like to thank Power Electronics, and especially to Llorenç Latorre and Consuelo Gómez-Zarzuela, their willingness to participate, and the excellent quality of a seminar that has given students a firsthand look at the day-to-day operations of a leading company in the field of power electronics. This type of collaboration reinforces the master’s program’s commitment to an education that is closely tied to technological innovation and the needs of the industry.
This seminar was funded by the UPV’s SIRVE program.
