UPV Named Finalist for 2025 Green Gown Awards in Climate Action Category

The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2025 International Green Gown Awards, in the category of 2030 Climate Action. UPV is the only Spanish institution selected in this category, highlighting its leadership in sustainability and climate innovation on a global stage.

The university’s project, titled “Towards 2030: Greening the Future from Campus to Community,” outlines a bold and comprehensive roadmap to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 for Scopes 1 and 2 emissions, while also addressing Scope 3 through sustainable procurement, mobility, and event management. The initiative is grounded in UPV’s SIRVE 2023–2027 Strategic Plan and integrates renewable energy expansion, energy efficiency, circular economy practices, and community collaboration.

Key achievements include:

  • Avoiding over 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually through 100% renewable electricity and efficiency upgrades.
  • Installing 974.87 kWp of photovoltaic capacity across 12 buildings.
  • Launching a Sustainable Mobility Plan that has increased public transport use and reduced car dependency.
  • Creating the UPV Living Lab, a platform for real-world testing of energy and sustainability solutions.
  • Engaging over 2,300 students in sustainability projects and fostering partnerships with local governments and NGOs.

UPV’s holistic and replicable model not only transforms its campuses but also serves as a blueprint for urban decarbonization and climate resilience across Europe and beyond.
