Record-breaking launch

Faraday Rocketry, a Spontaneous Generation team, will try to make history with Origin and break the national amateur rocketry record.

Making history is their goal. Origin is the name of the rocket of the Faraday Rocketry team, formed by 68 students, Most of them study at ETSIADIof the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). With its own technology, it wants to reach space. Its goal is to beat the national rocketry record amateurwhich is currently at 7.8km.

The UPV team counts, for the first time, with the collaboration of the Armed Forces and the  National Institute for Aerospace Technology(INTA) that are involved in supporting young talent. If the weather does not prevent it, Origin will be launched from the Experimentation Center of El Arenosillo of INTA, located in the province of Huelva. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 4. The weather forecast is not good and is being very variable. From 9 o’clock in the morning “we will have everything ready and we expect a window of one hour with low winds and little rain. We are quite confident that, during the course of Wednesday, we will make it,” explains Guzmán Marchesi, a student at the UPV and executive director of the team.

Faraday Rocketry will search for that wind window with balloon probes and activate special equipment that can operate in the rain. They will demonstrate, once again, their skill and ingenuity to overcome adversity in what is sure to be an epic launch.

The Origin rocket is approximately 3 meters long, reaches a maximum speed of 2500 km/h (twice the speed of sound) and the estimated apogee is 10km. The rocket is entirely student-built, with in-house manufacturing techniques that have enabled the development of the rocket engine, modular avionics and the at-sea recovery system.

Faraday Rocketry has been looking into space for four years, during which time it has launched five rockets and obtained  two victoriesat the European University Rocketry Championship  EuRoC. It has become the first Spanish team to achieve this by competing against universities with a larger budget.

This year it brings together 3,000 students in a total of 65 teams from various disciplines.
