Manguinhos revealed. A place of science
From 17 June to 5 September 2025
ETSA Exhibition Hall (building 2D, ground floor) Map
The Casa de Oswaldo Cruz and the Universitat Politècnica de València present this exhibition with the aim of making known the valuable documentary collection of photographs held by the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, the technical-scientific unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), based in the neighbourhood of Manguinhos, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. Dedicated to the preservation of the institution’s historical and cultural heritage, this unit carries out research, teaching, documentation and dissemination activities on the history of public health and biomedical sciences in Brazil.
The images collected between 1903 and 1946 document the origins of the Foundation and its scientific activities – such as the production of serums and vaccines, field research and specialised teaching – but also the urban transformations of the environment in which it is located.
Manguinhos revelat invites us on a journey through time, through the detailed look of the images, to the origins of a place that transformed the scientific and urban history of Rio de Janeiro.
