From November 9 to 12, the Gandia campus will host educational concerts, science outreach workshops, and lectures on stringed instrument making and music for audiences of all ages.
How does physics influence the sound of a violin? What role do materials play in the construction of a guitar? Can scientific research help improve a musical instrument? These are some of the questions that “Sonarte: Science and Instrument Making in Dialogue” will address—a project launched by the Gandia campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) that explores the connections between science, technology, music, and craftsmanship.
The initiative is led by Professor Rubén Picó, a specialist in musical acoustics, and involves research and technical staff from the UPV, the University of Valencia, the Valencia Conservatory of Music, and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, as well as renowned luthiers from Valencia, Barcelona, and Cremona (Italy).
Sonarte aims to bring scientific and technological culture closer to the public, especially students, teachers, music professionals, and anyone interested in discovering how musical instruments are built and studied from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The project is funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT)—Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities—and involves collaboration with the Gandia City Council and the CEIC Alfons el Vell, among other institutions.
Science, Music, and Instrument Making in Gandia
From November 9 to 12, “Sonarte: Science and Stringed Instrument Making in Dialogue” will offer a free program aimed at a variety of audiences, featuring activities that combine science outreach, music, and artisanal expertise.
On Monday, November 9, at 6:00 p.m., the Marqués González de Quirós Cultural Center in Gandia will host the opening concert, “The Sound of the Wind”, performed by Almudena Martín Castro.
On November 10 and 12, the UPV’s Gandia campus will host workshops, roundtable discussions, and educational concerts exploring the relationship between acoustics, materials, instrument making, and musical performance.
Sonarte Collection at the CRAI Gandia Campus Library
The CRAI Gandia Campus Library is also joining this initiative with the Sonarte Collection, a thematic section related to the project. The collection includes a selection of web resources, journals, and academic papers from the UPV—undergraduate and master’s theses—focused primarily on the acoustics of musical instruments.
A selection of these materials will be available for viewing both at the informational booth set up during the workshop sessions on the days of the event and at the exhibition in the library lobby from November 9 through 13.
