MUISE Professional Seminar: Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems, Ensuring the Continuity of the Power Supply

The days June 11 and 12, 2026, the Master’s Degree in Electronic Systems Engineering (MUISE) The Polytechnic University of Valencia held another professional seminar dedicated to the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Systems, a technology that is essential for ensuring the continuity of the power supply in critical applications. The session was led by the Prof. Dr. José Luis García de Vicuña, professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and one of the leading national and international authorities in power electronics and converter control.

Over the course of the two-day event, attendees explored the main Power topologies used in UPS systems, analyzing how these architectures have evolved to meet growing demands for efficiency, power quality, and reliability. The seminar provided insight into how this equipment is capable of ensuring an uninterrupted power supply in the event of grid outages, disturbances, or voltage fluctuations, making it an essential component in data centers, hospitals, telecommunications infrastructure, and industrial facilities.

One of the highlights of the seminar was the study of the control strategies applied to these systems. In addition to reviewing the conventional control techniques used in electronic converters, Professor García de Vicuña presented an introduction to the nonlinear control techniques, demonstrating how these methodologies can improve the dynamic performance, robustness, and stability of converters under demanding operating conditions. The comparison of different approaches allowed the students to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy and their suitability for various application scenarios.

The speaker supplemented the theoretical explanations with numerous practical examples and real-world design cases, giving students insight into the current challenges facing the power electronics industry. The combination of theoretical foundations, research experience, and industrial applications provided a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in uninterruptible power supply systems and the lines of research that will shape their evolution in the coming years.

As is the case with all MUISE professional seminars, the event encouraged very active participation from the students, who were able to exchange views with the speaker and ask questions related to converter design, advanced control techniques, and career opportunities in the power electronics sector. This direct contact with renowned researchers is one of the cornerstones of the specialized training offered by the master’s program.

From the academic administration of the MUISE We would like to express our gratitude to the Prof. Dr. José Luis García de Vicuña for sharing their extensive experience and offering a seminar of exceptional scientific and technical quality. We would also like to thank the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, whose participation helps strengthen cooperation among universities and expose our students to cutting-edge research.

This seminar was funded by the UPV’s SIRVE program.
