This seminar is offered as part of the course Determination of Ecological Status from the Master’s Degree in Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Marine and Coastal Ecosystems (MEMIC) It addresses the main criteria and indicators used to determine the good environmental status of benthic habitats.
The course will cover the main aspects related to the characterization and classification of benthic habitats, their uses, and the primary pressures and impacts to which they are subjected, as well as the European frameworks for their management and environmental assessment. It will also cover pressure, status, and monitoring indicators; different approaches for assessing the area, sensitivity, and condition of habitats; and indicators based on taxonomic and functional richness and diversity. In addition, integrated management tools such as maritime spatial planning and the DPSIR approach will be introduced.
Visiting Professor
The seminar will be taught by Alberto Serrano López, Research Professor at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC), at the Santander Oceanographic Center. His research focuses on the study of benthos, with special attention to anthropogenic impacts on these habitats.
