Course on Marine Protected Areas as a Fisheries Management Tool in the MEMIC Master’s Program

The days April 22 and 23, 2026, the Master’s Degree in Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Marine and Coastal Ecosystems (MEMIC) has hosted the course “Marine Protected Areas as Resources for Fisheries”, taught by David Díaz Viñolas, Senior Researcher at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) from the Balearic Islands Oceanographic Center.

The activity, conducted as part of the course Management of Marine Protected Areas and Ecosystem Restoration, has focused on the role of the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as a key tool for the sustainable management of marine resources. These areas make it possible to reconcile ecosystem conservation with the regulated use of resources through the implementation of specific management and monitoring measures

The course covered conceptual and regulatory aspects, as well as practical examples related to the implementation of marine reserves of fisheries interest. It also highlighted the importance of long-term monitoring programs for evaluating the effectiveness of these measures and improving management decision-making.

These types of activities allow students to gain firsthand experience with practical applications in the field of marine management, strengthening the connection between academic training and professional practice.

This activity is part of the commitment by the Polytechnic University of Valencia with the UPV SIRVE Strategic Plan, promoting teaching that is connected to the professional world and involving leading experts.
