This course is offered as part of the course Management of Marine Protected Areas and Ecosystem Restoration of the MEMIC Master’s program and discusses the functionality of the Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and, in particular, marine reserves of fisheries interest as key tools for the sustainable management of the marine environment.
The course will introduce the legal and management concepts that distinguish MPAs from marine reserves, as well as their main ecological and fisheries benefits. Through various case studies, the positive effects of these protected areas and their application to the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources will be analyzed. Furthermore, the importance of long-term monitoring programs for understanding the dynamics of marine ecosystems and improving management decision-making will be highlighted.
Visiting Professor
The course will be taught by David Díaz Viñolas, a research scientist at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC), at the Balearic Islands Oceanographic Center. His research focuses on the assessment and design of marine protected areas, the study of benthic habitats, the biology of species of fishery interest such as lobster, and the management of artisanal fisheries.
