Underwater Noise and Its Impact on Cetacean Communication

Noise pollution in the oceans is a growing threat to marine life. A former student of the Master’s Degree in Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Marine and Coastal Ecosystems (MEMIC), Blanca Feliu Tena, recently published an informative article in Fundación Muy Interesante.

In this article It explains how human-generated underwater noise—caused by activities such as maritime traffic and seismic surveys—can interfere with the communication of cetaceans that rely on sound to socialize, navigate, hunt, and find their way, seriously affecting their behavior and health.

Blanca, who is currently affiliated with the Underwater Acoustics Group at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (CSIC), highlights the importance of understand and mitigate these impacts to ensure the conservation of cetacean populations and the ecosystems they share.
