CIRAM
The Research Centre for Mediterranean Irrigation and Agricultural Systems (CIRAM) brings together a multidisciplinary research team with extensive experience and expertise in irrigation technology, water management and governance, soil and crop science, and the characterisation of Mediterranean agricultural systems.
Our work spans research, innovation and consultancy, with the aim of advancing sustainable, efficient and resilient agriculture in response to the challenges posed by climate change and water scarcity. We pursue this aim through research, development and innovation (R&D&I) projects and close collaboration with public authorities, water-user associations and organisations across the agricultural sector.
Areas of Work
Irrigation Engineering and Technology
Our team conducts applied research aimed at optimising water and energy use in pressurised irrigation systems. We combine agrohydrological modelling, advanced sensing technologies and specialised design tools to develop more efficient irrigation solutions for agriculture.
Soil, Water and Mapping
The team’s mission is to generate scientific knowledge and develop advanced technological solutions for the sustainable management of natural resources. Our work combines physicochemical and biological analyses of soil and water with digital mapping and environmental modelling techniques to support public institutions, businesses and the scientific community.
Water Economics, Management and Governance
The Water Economics, Management and Governance Group analyses irrigation systems and Mediterranean agroecosystems from an interdisciplinary perspective, combining approaches from economics, institutional analysis and political ecology to promote sustainable, resilient and socially equitable water management.

IrriGo
The project assesses irrigation modernisation from an integrated socioecological and technical perspective, examining new technology adoption and system performance amid climate change, rural depopulation and globalisation. It develops future scenarios to strengthen the resilience of irrigation systems and rural communities.
RiVIVE project
River Conviviality: Advancing socio-environmentally just river restoration through nature based solutions. Exploring how to foster more inclusive, biodiverse and socio-environmentally just river restoration practices.
