The University of Indonesia's GreenMetric index ranks the UPV as the third best university in the world regarding waste management
According to the GreenMetric index, which is prepared annually by the University of Indonesia (UI), the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV ) is the third best university in the world as regards waste management, ranking behind only the US’s Northeastern University and Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University.
The GreenMetric index, created in 2010, evaluates policies for environmental sustainability in higher education centres internationally, according to six categories: energy efficiency and fight against climate change, waste management, water resources, infrastructure, promoting green transport and environmental education.
26th best university in the world in energy efficiency and fight against climate change
In addition to its excellent position in the category of waste management, the UPV ranks 26th globally in energy efficiency and fight against climate change, and also makes the Spanish podium in the GreenMetric index’s overall ranking, where it ranks 45th, behind only two other Spanish universities : the Universidad de Alcalá (12th) and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (24th).
This is the fourth year that the UI elaborates the GreenMetric index, currently led by the University of Nottingham (UK). In that index, the UPV has always been among the top 50, despite the steady increase in the number of universities tested (95 in 2010, 178 in 2011, 215 in 2012, and 301 from 61 different countries in this edition, for the year 2013).
The Universitat Jaume I and the University of Santiago, also in the top 100
In addition to the three already mentioned, two other Spanish universities are listed among the 100 world’s best in terms of environmental sustainability policies. They are the Universitat Jaume I of Castelló de la Plana and the University of Santiago de Compostela, which share the 95th position in this ranking.
Also present in the UI's ranking are the following Spanish universities: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelona Tech (110th), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (126th), Universidad de Las Palmas (176th), Universitat de València (179th), Universidad de Navarra (187th), Universidad de La Laguna (192th), Universidad de Jaén (230th) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (233rd).
