BODY (3/4 paragraphs): The QS World University Ranking is regarded, with the ARWU (Shanghai) and the THE (Times Higher Education) indexes, as one of the three most prestigious global gauges of higher education. Its results for the 2015-2016 academic year, which have been announced today, place the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), for the fifth consecutive year, among the world’s top 500 universities (there are more than 20.000 higher education institutions in the world).

Specifically, the UPV is in the range of 411 to 420, and has improved its ranking by 10 places compared to the previous edition. Furthermore, this year the UPV has achieved its second best mark ever, ranking only behind that of 2013 (when it was 383th).

"A prestigious institution, adapted to the needs of society"

In its report, QS says that the UPV "is a prestigious public institution providing modern, flexible degrees, adapted to the needs of society". They also stress that the UPV "excels in many areas of technological research", specifying "patents, technology licenses, and cooperation agreements with several companies to carry research and development activities".

Their study underlines the fact that the UPV "comprises three fully equipped campuses", with special emphasis on the 840,191 m² of the Vera Campus (València), "a pedestrian campus with more than 123,510 m² of green areas" in which "the cafeterias, the pavement cafés, the kiosks, the banks and other services are designed to make everyday college life more comfortable".

"Excellent sports facilities, over 1,800 courses a year belonging to all specialties, and agreements with 549 different universities"

Along with this, the report states that "the UPV has excellent sports facilities" and organizes "over 1,800 courses a year belonging to all specialties, so that every student can shape their curriculum in a way that will suit their interests."

Finally, QS highlights the UPV’s dimensions –"its academic community includes 36,823 students, 2,661 teachers and researchers, and 1,422 management and services staff members"– and praises it for having signed “agreements with 549 universities, which allows students to spend a semester in one of 71 countries around the world, not just in Europe but also in the United States, Japan, China, Australia, Canada and Latin America."

Among the world’s top 200 universities in Engineering and Technology (160th) and in Natural Sciences (198th)

The QS Ranking evaluates five main areas of knowledge; the UPV stands out in Engineering and Technology -in which it ranks 160th, 5 places higher than in 2014- and in Natural Sciences as well –in this area too, the UPV is among the world’s top 200, namely 198th.

Furthermore, the UPV is also among the 400 most important universities as regards reputation with companies (349th) and academic reputation (390th).

In the Spanish top ten and the Valencian leader

Among Spanish universities, the UPV ranks ninth in the overall assessment, fourth in Engineering and Technology, and fifth in Natural Sciences.

Besides that, the UPV is in the Spanish top ten (namely, eighth) as regards reputation with companies. It is also the best university in the Valencian Community.

A ranking developed by the Quacquarelli Symonds consulting firm

The QS World University Ranking, which is annually prepared by the Quacquarelli Symonds consulting firm, is created from six criteria: academic reputation, reputation with companies, ratio of teachers per registered student, ratio of each teacher’s citations compared all teachers’ citations, number of foreign teachers and, finally, number of international students.

In addition to the overall assessment, the QS ranking analyses the work of universities in five broad areas of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.
