Nova Talent

Juanvi Maz, graduate and master in industrial engineering by the UPV, is part of the list of most influential students in Spain

[ 02/06/2023 ]

From the UPV to Sweden. Some would simply get on a plane for the journey. Others, like Juanvi Maz, have worked very hard during their university years to get training and work opportunities that are beginning to bear fruit.

Juanvi Maz is one of a select group of five students from the Universitat Politécnica de València who have been recognised this year in Nova Talent, the list of the 111 most influential students - aged between 18 and 25 - in Spain.

Maz studied for a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering at the UPV and is currently enrolled in a Double Degree programme, which consists of a Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering at the UPV and a Master's Degree in Renewable Energy Engineering at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In the Swedish capital, he combines his studies with his work at the headquarters of Northvolt, a Swedish energy storage company.

He discovered his vocation at the UPV, which, he says, "was a huge change in my way of thinking and my priorities; it marked a before and an after". As Maz explains, "Before I went there (the UPV), my interest in academia was low, and I lacked motivation. However, after some time there, it was, above all, the quality of the faculty staff that made me change and see my studies differently. Attending lessons from great professors was a great source of motivation; seeing how they spoke and explained, their knowledge, the speed of reasoning... it made me think about the importance of my training".

His time at the UPV was well worthwhile. He participated with a grant in the International Summer School Lucerne 2018, was on a Double Degree exchange in Stockholm and was the beneficiary of a collaboration grant from the Ministry of Education, thanks to which he participated in a research project for the Department of Electrical Engineering at the UPV, where he wrote his Final Degree Project.

Awards for academic excellence

Juanvi Maz's list of awards is very extensive: He was Award for the best record of his class in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of the Degree in Industrial Engineering; Extraordinary Award to the Graduate with the best record of the 2016-2020 class; Extraordinary Award to the UPV Graduate with the best record; Award to the Best UPV Student in the XX Edition of the Social Council Awards; Academic Excellence Award of the Valencian Community and 2nd Classified in the National Ranking of Academic Excellence (SEDEA), which recognises the best students at a national level of the Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering.

Knowing his achievements, it is not surprising that he has been recognised this year as one of the most influential students in Spain. Being part of the Nova Talent list "is a great source of pride" for Maz. This brilliant student recognises that being on the list "has many immediate benefits, such as having a Talent Agent to guide me in my professional decisions, to know where to direct my career. There are always doubts about whether the direction taken is appropriate; there are many factors in such decisions, and having a professional guiding me is very beneficial".

It has also allowed him to participate in private events with other award winners and very powerful profiles. It has "accelerated my career, both personally and professionally".
