Last March 3, 2026, the Master’s Degree in Occupational Risk Prevention from the Polytechnic University of Valencia organized the conference “Disaster Prevention and Management Based on the Japanese Model”, taught by Carmen Grau Vila, Ph.D. in History and expert in disaster management with a gender-sensitive approach.
The session was held at the Auditorium of the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineering and provided students, faculty, and interested staff with an international perspective on Japan’s culture of prevention, which is particularly relevant given Japan’s extensive experience in emergency and disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
During the conference, key aspects of the Japanese model of disaster management, with a special focus on the importance of prevention, planning, public education, and institutional coordination. The discussion also addressed the need for incorporate an inclusive and gender-sensitive approach into emergency management, considering how disasters affect different groups in different ways.
