The university program for people over 50 is growing by adding new courses.
It’s never too late to get started in graphic design, understand the geopolitics of the sea, or reflect on the impact of artificial intelligence on the media. That is the philosophy behind the Senior University, the university program for people over 50 offered by the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).
This initiative, which will celebrate its tenth edition during the 2026–2027 academic year at the UPV’s Gandia Campus, is aimed at people eager to continue learning and sharing experiences. With an educational and cultural focus, it offers a varied program covering areas such as economics, film, gastronomy, the environment, neuroscience, and cultural heritage.
Having established itself as one of the campus’s most popular educational programs since its launch in the 2017–2018 academic year, the Senior University is kicking off the new academic year with some significant changes. The main one is the expansion of its course offerings. “For the 2026–2027 academic year, we have increased the number of spots to 140, divided into two groups of 70 students who will attend classes on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays,” says Javier Estornell, coordinator of the Senior Program at the Gandia Campus.
Another new development is the addition of five new courses. “The curriculum includes courses that combine current events, culture, and knowledge from an educational perspective, such as Health and Active Aging Strategies: Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Well-Being, The Economy and Geopolitics of the Sea, From Radio to AI: Understanding the Media That Have Changed Us, Introduction to Graphic Design and Typography and From Novel to Film: Traces of Anglo-Saxon and Spanish Literature on Today’s Screen“, adds Estornell.
These offerings complement the established courses that are highly valued by senior students. Next academic year’s senior program will provide students with a deeper understanding of how the brain works, take them on a journey to ancient Egypt, introduce them to ethnobotany, delve into Greek mythology and art, explore the Mediterranean cultural landscape, and enjoy unique experiences such as fruit tasting or a journey through the flavours of antiquity.
In addition to the regular courses, “the Senior University will continue to expand its offerings of specialized courses. “In addition to the well-established theatre workshop, new courses focused on artificial intelligence and emotional intelligence will be added; these will be held in the morning to make it easier for students to participate without conflicting with their regular classes,” says the program coordinator.
With this new edition, the Gandia Campus’s senior program reaffirms its commitment to lifelong learning, transforming the university into an open space where people can learn, share experiences, and enjoy academic knowledge.
