Erasmus Mundus Master's Degree in Plant Health in Sustainable Agriculture


Introduction

This master's degree programme, integrated within the Erasmus Mundus Programme, has been designed by the leading European universities in the field of sustainable agriculture; thus, it provides high-level education including the latest updates. With this degree, graduates obtain the qualification that they need to be able to meet current and future challenges in plant health management in relation to global food security.

Plant health management is a key issue for global development in the fields of food security and environmental preservation. With the increasing globalization and climate change, new diseases and pests threaten agricultural production. In many parts of the world, plant health products are not used in accordance with advanced security regulations.


Objectives

The main aim of this course is to train highly qualified professionals to manage crop protection methods that are safe within a sustainable agriculture framework, both in developed countries and in developing countries.

This master's degree programme is attractive and innovative, and will allow students to develop the ability to see plant health in a broad context, with a focus on sustainability, taking into account all the relevant agronomic factors: the plant variety, nutrition, soil tillage, crop rotation, etc.

Students will gain skills for, and an advanced knowledge of, mycology, virology, entomology, nematology and weed control science, in order to efficiently analyse or diagnose the biotic and/or abiotic restrictions on productivity in sustainable farming systems.

Structure of the master's degree programme

1st year

    • 60 ECTS (compulsory subjects on basic aspects). You can study at the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain) or at Universität Göttingen (Germany). Classes are in English.

2nd year

    • First quarter: 30 ECTS for specialization. In the first quarter of your second year, you must study at one of the host universities, which must be different from that in which you completed your first year and will depend on the specialization that you want to obtain. Teaching is in English, except at French universities, where it is in French.

    • Second quarter: 30 ECTS for the master's thesis.

Master's double degree

    • Students will obtain the degree of the host university and that of their original one.

    • Bachelor's Degree in Forest and Environmental Engineering.

    • Agricultural Engineer.

    • Forest Engineer.

    • Technical Agricultural Engineer.

Specializations

Each of the universities provides a specialization:

    • Universität Göttingen (Germany): specialization in temperate crops, herbaceous crops and energy crops.

    • Agrocampus Ouest, Montpellier SupAgro and AgroParis Tech (France): specialization in tropical horticulture and temperate vegetable crops.

    • Università di Padova (Italy): specialization in temperate fruit crops, ornamental plants and landscape.

    • Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain): specialization in Mediterranean crops in orchards and greenhouses.


Admission criteria

    • A bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) in Agronomy, Agriculture or related fields, with at least 4 ECTS in plant health or crop protection, or some equivalent.

    • Documents proving English language proficiency: B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), unless English is the student's mother tongue.

    • A filled-in application form including two reference letters.
