Inauguration of ETSIGCT

Angel Marqués Mateu reaffirms his position as Director of the Higher School of Engineering in Geodesy, Cartography and Surveying and launches the Advisory Council

[ 25/02/2026 ]

'It's truly incredible; I never imagined I could become a director.' With these words, Ángel Marqués Mateu assumes the directorship of the School of Engineering in Geodesy, Cartography and Surveying (ETSIGCT) at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). Once again, the profile of several of the directors of this legislature, who were students at the centre they currently run, is repeated. Marqués was a student in the first graduating class, born in Valencia (1967), studied at this same school between 1989 and 1992, and has developed his professional and academic career in geospatial engineering. 'It is a very intense and enriching experience,' he said. He has been reappointed as director of the ETSIGCT, a position he has held since 2022. (Election results)

Natural evolution

Before taking over the directorship, he was part of the management team of the previous director, Ana Belén Anquela Julián, currently the Ombuds Officer of the UPV. 'It has been an almost natural evolution,' he explained. 'There have been six years of projects and programmes that have allowed us to consolidate a line of work and set new challenges on a solid foundation.'

He is a technical engineer in Topography (1992) and an engineer in Geodesy and Cartography (2003). He holds a PhD in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems from the UPV (2013). He is a Senior Lecturer in the Cartographic Engineering, Geodesy, and Photogrammetry Department, and he teaches courses in geographic information technologies. He is a member of the Valencian Centre for Irrigation Studies (CVER) and president of the Conference of Directors of Geomatics Engineering and Surveying.

Launch of the Advisory Council

Among his short-term objectives, Marqués highlighted the launch of the Advisory Council, which held its first meeting on the same day as his inauguration, 23 February 2025. The rector of the UPV, José E. Capilla, presided over the ceremony.

Angel Marqués also stated that 'we aim to create a new degree programme and continue working on Chairs and business classrooms. These are projects we are already working on, some of which are well advanced and others still in the initial stages'. He also highlighted the evolution of the ETSIGCT in recent years. 'In my day, the focus was very much on civil engineering. Today, we have diversified significantly, especially in the field of new technologies and ICT, which play a crucial role in current programmes. '

A passion for horticulture

On a more personal level, the new director wanted to highlight the support of those around him.' Family is absolutely fundamental." A resident of the Benicalap neighbourhood in Valencia, Marqués also shared one of his great hobbies: organic horticulture. 'I love it. I make my own compost, and right now I'm harvesting broad beans. It's a way to disconnect and maintain a personal commitment to ecology,' he said.
