The Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) of the Universitat Politècnica de València has celebrated its twentieth anniversary, coinciding with International Telecommunications Day. The event, which took place at the Bancaja Foundation of Valencia, featured a journey through the twenty years of the history of the Institute by its current director, Narcís Cardona.
Cardona highlighted the collective effort of the iTEAM team, which has led to significant scientific production and innovation over the last 20 years. This is evident in the 216 doctoral theses supervised, the leadership and participation of the Institute in 1,319 research projects, the publication of 1,647 scientific articles, the granting of 57 patents - some of them exploited through the creation of 5 spin-offs - and the support of several start-ups. The team's commitment has been recognised with 71 awards, including the Jaume I Prize, the National Research Prize and the Physics Academy Prize.
"These figures show that iTEAM is not only a research institute but also an innovation ecosystem and growth engine for the telecommunications sector in the Valencian Community," emphasises Narcís Cardona.
The director of iTEAM also presented a report on the impact of telecommunications technologies on society and the regional science and innovation system. Among the figures in this report, Cardona pointed out that the telecommunications sector in the Valencian Community represents 2.92% of GDP. "The companies and entities collaborating with iTEAM have contributed 1% to the regional GDP, corresponding to a turnover of 33.85% of the total sector, with 40.47% of these entities being SMEs," said Cardona.
The director of iTEAM also underscored the Institute's pivotal role in the Valencian business network. Currently, iTEAM has agreements with companies that contribute more than 3% of the GDP in the Valencian Community alone. "We have played a significant role in creating and supporting the business fabric of the Community, and in these 20 years, we have returned more than 170 million euros in competitive projects, a third of them in the last 5 years," said Cardona.
The event was attended by the Rector of the Universitat Politècnica de València, José E. Capilla, the Regional Secretary for Universities, Esther Gómez, and the General Director of Information and Communication Technologies, José Manuel García Duarte, among others.
The commemorative poster for these 20 years of iTEAM R+D+i, designed by Valencian illustrator Paco Roca, was also presented during the event. In it, he recreates the Palacio de las Comunicaciones de Valencia, specifically its iconic tower and three figurative sculptures, updating them with 21st-century technology.
