The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), a non-profit association formed by 76 Spanish universities, including the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), issued a communiqué on Thursday expressing its "deep regret at the severe events currently taking place in the Gaza Strip".
Although Spanish universities have repeatedly reaffirmed their commitment to peace, the CRUE affirms that the events do not prevent the university community from being "once again deeply moved by the worsening of the conflict and its painful consequences for the Palestinian population".
In this sense, the Rector of the UPV, Prof. Dr. José E. Capilla, has stated on his social networks that "the university must reinforce its role for coexistence, peace and justice, defending peace, an essential right".
In addition to demanding the immediate cessation of military operations by the Israeli army, as well as all terrorist actions, and the respect of the State of Israel by international law, the CRUE is committed to "reviewing and, if necessary, suspending collaboration agreements with Israeli universities and research centres that have not expressed a firm commitment to peace and compliance with international humanitarian law".
It is also proposed to "intensify cooperation with the Palestinian scientific and higher education system and expand our cooperation, volunteer and refugee programmes" and to "ensure that the exercise of freedom of expression is free from the equally reprehensible behaviour of anti-Semitism or Islamophobia, as well as any other hateful behaviour, within university communities".
