To reduce cancer cases, the goal

The UPV and Against Cancer Valencia join forces to transform the university into a smoke-free space

[ 31/05/2023 ]

The Universitat Politécnica de València (UPV) and the Spanish Association Against Cancer Valencia have signed a collaboration agreement to promote healthy lifestyle habits among the university community and transform the university into a smoke-free space. This initiative aims to protect non-smokers from environmental tobacco smoke and electronic cigarette aerosols, de-normalise consumption and encourage those who already smoke to give up their habit.

According to the Observatory of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the Valencian Community is the autonomous region with the fourth highest number of daily smokers, 850,220, of whom 60,886 are under 25. " Only by eliminating smoking would we be able to reduce up to 30% of cancer cases. We need to join forces to achieve a tobacco-free generation: the aim is that by 2030 no 18-year-old will have tried tobacco", says Tomás Trenor, president of Against Cancer Valencia.

For his part, José Capilla, Rector of UPV, indicated that "the university has to be the first to set an example on its campuses, huge spaces where we spend many hours, and even more so in a context where people are demanding more measures than the ones that currently exist in the legislation. As far as we can, we will teach health education and try to be ahead by creating smoke-free spaces and, in general, healthy environments".

Moving towards a smoke-free environment

Freeing the UPV from tobacco smoke will be carried out in several phases. The first is to remind people through an information campaign of the areas where smoking is already prohibited, such as the entrance doors to campus buildings and the terraces. These limitations also apply to other tobacco inhalation devices, water pipes or hookahs, including e-cigarettes or vapes, both outdoors and indoors.

In the following steps...

This is only the first step in an agreement that, in addition to foster smoke-free spaces, aims to promote health and prevention in three other areas: sun protection, healthy eating and physical activity within the university community, all of which contribute to strengthening health and preventing cancer.
