The decision was unanimous. The best innovative initiative in safety and quality of the III Industrial Safety Awards is that of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). After receiving the report from the Technical Commission, the jury chose its Master’s Degree in Industrial Safety as the first official Master’s Degree of its kind in Spain. These studies have been created by the School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) and have been launched this year.
“The degree is taught 50-50 between UPV faculty and professionals with extensive experience in the industrial safety sector,” says Beatriz García Fayos, academic director of the master’s degree. “This provides students with an academic, but also practical vision of the profession, which adds value to the training,” she adds. The collaborating entities are companies and institutions such as Dekra, GDES, Enagas, Saggas, Air Oca, Mazel asistencia técnica, Integra ingeniería, Arcelor Mittal, Gexcon and DNV, as well as the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Industriales, the Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros técnicos and ASEIVAL, among others.
These awards are organized by the Valencian Association of Inspection Entities (ASEIVAL), with the support of the Department of Sustainable Economy, Productive Processes, Trade and Labor, as well as by the Industrial Safety Coordination Council of the Valencian Community. “To promote and recognize the commitment to the dissemination and implementation of good practices in the field of industrial safety in the Valencian Community” is the aim of these awards, according to José Luis de la Rosa Marqueño, president of this Association.
In response to a need
For several years, students with a degree and professionals from different sectors had been telling the UPV about the market need to train engineering students in the field of industrial and process safety. Endorsed by multiple letters of support from large and medium-sized companies, professional associations and associations, the proposal for the design of the degree was prepared and received a favorable report from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) in 2022.
Range of professional opportunities
Graduates of the Master’s Degree in Industrial Safety will be able to intervene in projects of facilities, processes, products and services in this field, as well as in their supervision. They will be able to work in process companies, consultancies, engineering firms and companies dedicated to the verification, inspection and maintenance of facilities, as well as in the public administration. This master’s degree contributes to enriching the industrial fabric with professionals with a technical profile and a high level of training who can coordinate, supervise, manage and direct activities related to industrial safety in its different fields of application.
The award was collected by Marival Segarra, Vice-Rector for the Organization of Studies, Quality, Accreditation and Languages of the UPV, and Beatriz García Fayos, Academic Director of the Master’s Degree in Industrial Safety of the School of Industrial Engineering.
