Description of the title

The Master in Sustainable Chemistry is an interuniversity master’s degree in which the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), the Universitat Jaume I de Castellón (UJI) and the Universidad de Extremadura (UEx) participate.

This master’s degree will develop the knowledge necessary for the student to be able to work in new chemical processes that are efficient, economically viable and carried out in an environmentally friendly way. This will allow minimizing the consumption of energy and raw materials, as well as reducing the risks associated with the production, handling and use of chemical products necessary for our society.

This master is a national reference in the fields of Sustainable Chemistry and Catalysis. One of the most important research institutes in Catalysis in Europe, the Institute of Chemical Technology (UPV-CSIC) actively participates in this master’s degree and allows students to carry out the final work of the master’s degree in its facilities, under the supervision of one of its researchers.

Objectives of the degree

The main objectives of the master’s degree are:

To develop the principles of sustainable chemistry and their practical application in chemical industry processes.

Know the tools and areas of work of sustainable chemistry, including the following:

  • Use of renewable raw materials
  • Atomic economy
  • Use of cleaner solvents (solvents under supercritical conditions, water chemistry, solvent-free reactions, etc.)
  • Use of alternative reaction conditions (microwave, electrochemistry, sonochemistry, mechanochemistry)
  • Catalysis: homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, acid-base catalysts, red-ox catalysts, imprinting of solid catalysts, enantioselective catalysis…
  • Biocatalysis: processes catalyzed by enzymes or entire cells, use of genetically modified organisms, etc.
  • Photochemistry and photocatalysis
  • Alternative energy sources
  • Waste recovery

Recognize toxicity/hazard as a physical/structural property that can be engineered and manipulated.

To become familiar with current trends in green chemistry in order to be able to make a critical analysis of the sustainability of industrial processes.

Internships

Internships are voluntary (extracurricular). The Integrated Employment Service If they request a student profile in accordance with the characteristics of the master’s degree, they are sent to the person in charge of the master’s degree who, through the internal website of the master’s degree (poliformat), sends them to the enrolled students.

Research and access to Ph.

This master’s degree has a research orientation and gives access to the PhD program in Sustainable Chemistry at the Universitat Politécnica de Valencia.

Academic exchange / agreements with other universities

Academic exchange through international programs is managed by the Office of International Exchange Programs (OPII). To the extent of its possibilities, the academic committee of the master’s degree will facilitate this exchange for those students who wish to do so.

Facilities and laboratories

Classes are held in Classroom 4.2 of the School of Geodetic, Cartographic and Topographic Engineering (building 7i). The experimental part (TFM) is carried out in the laboratories and with the equipment of the Institute of Chemical Technology (mixed center UPV-Superior Council of Scientific Research).

Master’s Thesis

The Master’s Thesis (18 credits) is the experimental part of the master’s degree and will be preferably with a research focus, and may be carried out at the facilities of the Institute of Chemical Technology under the direction of one of its researchers.

Collaborating companies and more

The company CIMSA, through the Aula Empresa CIMSA Sostenibilidad, actively collaborates with the master’s degree by granting aid for the completion of master’s theses related to Sustainable Chemistry and by granting aid for internships at the Institute of Chemical Technology.
