CiènciaLab 2026

An initiative to awaken scientific vocation among high school students.

In order to bring science closer to society and promote interest in knowledge among young people, every year various informative activities are promoted. Among them, the Gandia Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) puts in value CiènciaLab, a program designed to bring science, technology and creativity closer to high school students.

Promoted by the Communication Area of the UPV, this initiative offers scientific, technological and artistic workshops aimed at students in third and fourth year of compulsory secondary education and vocational training. Each workshop, lasting an hour and a half, is taught by university professors and is adapted to the lines of research of the Gandia Campus. The sessions are held in the morning and at the university facilities.

The groups, formed by 20-25 students, who visit the Gandia Campus live an enriching experience that promotes learning, motivation and scientific curiosity.

A new path to learning

During the second quarter of the academic year 2025-2026 the Gandia Campus offers four different workshops:

A virtual trip around the world was taught by Professor Jesús Martí, allowing students to discover how geolocation technologies and satellite images work through the use of tools such as Google Earth, Engine and Voyager. Through the creation of virtual routes and flights, students learn to interpret GNSS data and to represent places of interest in a digital tour of the planet.

Using freely available software applications, participants learn how to use remote sensing to analyze environmental changes in glaciers, forest fires, wetlands or volcanoes. The workshop offered by Professor Javier Estornell, Environmental satellite surveys, uses Sentinel-2 and Landsat satellite images to observe and compare the evolution of the earth’s surface.

The workshop: What are interactive and immersive technologies? By Fernando Boronat, it introduces students to the concept of interactivity and immersiveness and their differences, showing real applications and practical examples developed at the Gandia Campus that demonstrate the potential of these technologies.

Finally, the workshop I want to be a podcaster, coordinated by Raúl Terol, brings students closer to the world of radio and podcasts through an introduction to the operation of a radio studio and its basic tools. Students learn the pillars of radio language and the main podcast formats, focusing on the creation of a radio spot as a practical exercise.

CiènciaLab has thus consolidated itself as an educational experience that opens up new ways of learning and awakens scientific vocations from an early age.
