Committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is holding the Environment Week from 10 to 14 November.
Watching TV, playing video game, flying from Madrid to London or simply eating a pizza. Many of the things we do every day contribute to carbon dioxide emissions and, therefore, to climate change. It is our personal carbon footprint, and knowing it is the first step in knowing how to offset it.
For this reason, and with the aim of raising awareness of its importance, the Environment Unit (UMA) invites the university community to participate in the Environment Week of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) which will be held from 10 to 14 November. This initiative seeks to “publicize the UMA and its new website with all the information related to the carbon footprint in the UPV,” says Cristina Martí. As well as, “disseminate and raise awareness about the carbon footprint of the UPV” and “the need to involve the entire university community, raising awareness about the impact of the university carbon footprint”.
Evolution of the carbon footprint
The UPV began registering its carbon footprint in 2014 with the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, according to Royal Decree 163/2014. Since then, the university annually calculates its emissions derived from university activity, verified through periodic external audits.
Thanks to various energy efficiency and sustainability measures, UPV has managed to reduce its carbon footprint (scopes 1 and 2) by 83% since 2014. Among the most outstanding actions are the use of 100% renewable electrical energy and the replacement of heating and cooling equipment with more efficient and sustainable systems.
If you want to know the evolution of the carbon footprint by campus or the environmental commitments of the UPV, please visit the UPV carbon footprint website. In addition, during the Environment Week you can participate in a survey and receive a gift from the UMA.
Calculate your carbon footprint
To find out your environmental impact, the UN provides a personal carbon footprint calculator. With it, you can find out how much pollutant emissions you generate based on your consumption of electricity, gas and fuel. And, most importantly, what you can do to save on your bills and reduce your impact on nature.
