“I bring a scientist to my school”

Celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. New activities organized by the Equality Committee of the Gandia Campus on the occasion of 11F.

For the eighth consecutive year, and on the occasion of the February 11, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Equality Committee of the Gandia Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) is organizing the initiative “I bring a scientist to my school”, which will take place during the month of February within the framework of the state action, with the support of the IVIO Chair.

This year, the 11F initiative at the national level wants to focus on gender bias in artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now an essential tool driving advances in almost every field, from medicine to education. However, AI is not neutral: it learns from the data it receives and, when these reflect social inequalities-especially gender inequalities-algorithms can reproduce and even amplify them. These biases can arise at different stages of AI development: in the training data, in the labels applied by people, in the model design or in the lack of diversity in the teams that develop them.

Gender bias in AI is not an isolated technical problem. Several studies show that they affect areas such as labor, health, justice and finance, influencing career opportunities, diagnostic accuracy, judicial decisions or access to credit.

In this context, digital education is key. Workshops with minors show that gender stereotypes appear even in AI-generated images, and learning to detect them reinforces critical thinking. Several experts in the field of artificial intelligence stress that increasing female participation in STEAM areas is essential to transform technology from its origin.

I bring a scientist to my school 2026

The VIII edition of “I bring a scientist to my school” of the Gandia Campus will continue in the classrooms of educational centers of the Safor and other regions, aimed at students in kindergarten, primary, secondary, high school and adult schools.

The objective of this initiative is to make the work of women scientists and technicians more visible and to bring these professions closer to students through informative and awareness-raising activities by women who carry out their professional and research activities in the fields of science, technology, the arts, engineering and mathematics.

The recognition of the merits achieved by women scientists and experts is still a pending subject in the classroom, where female role models are still scarce. Having these role models is key to inspire girls and adolescents, favoring the overcoming of gender stereotypes that persist in our society and broadening expectations about their professional future.
