UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025

The Universitat Politècnica de València, among the 250 universities in the world most committed to the environment.

GreenMetric the environmental university ranking par excellence, has recognized the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) as one of the 250 universities in the world most committed to sustainability and the environment.

In its latest edition -UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025-, the university currently headed by José E. Capilla is ranked 240th.

Top 5 nationally and only polytechnic in Spain present in the ranking.

At the continental level, the UPV is in 62nd position, while, at the national level, GreenMetric recognizes the UPV as the fourth best university in Spain, as well as being the most outstanding of the Valencian Community and the only polytechnic in the country to appear in a ranking that, this year, in its sixteenth edition, analyzes a total of 1745 university institutions in 105 countries.

Likewise, of the 6 criteria used to carry out the ranking -energy efficiency and the fight against climate change; waste management; water resources; infrastructure; promotion of non-polluting transport, and environmental education-, the UPV stands out especially in four of them, where it is top10 nationally: environmental education (2nd), water resources (3rd, and top100 worldwide), promotion of non-polluting transport (4th) and energy efficiency and the fight against climate change (7th).

52 indicators analyzed

For its annual ranking, GreenMetric analyzes a total of 52 indicators, from the use of energy-efficient electrical machinery to the implementation of the smart building program, the number of renewable energy sources on the different campuses, the use of electricity per population, the proportion of renewable energy production in relation to the total, the existence of programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the proportion of total carbon footprint divided by the campus population, the university’s climate change impact programs, the existence of waste recycling programs, actions against paper and plastic waste, and the treatment of organic and inorganic waste, toxic waste and wastewater, among many others.

Produced by the University of Indonesia (UI) since 2010 (95 universities from 35 countries participated in its initial edition), GreenMetric is the benchmark ranking in the field of university sustainability, and its prestige and impact, in terms of awareness and results, are internationally recognized.
