ERASMUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM SEPIE (EU FUNDS ) - GENERAL GRANT
(FINAL INFORMATION

The purpose of the Erasmus scholarship is not to fully finance the students' mobilities but to compensate for the difference in living standards between the country of origin and the destination country and/or to help cover extra expenses, such as travel costs.

The financial aid available to the beneficiaries of an Erasmus+ mobility activity is always subject to the distribution of European funds carried out by the Spanish National Erasmus Agency -SEPIE (www.sepie.es).

The UPV received confirmation of the Erasmus budget allocated by SEPIE for 2025-2026 on 21 July 21st, 2025

Some details, such as the maximum number of months that can be financed, or some categories of students who may receive additional funding, were updated on this website after July 21, 2025.

Our current estimation is that students who join their host university in August or September will not receive any payment until at least late October, even if they have all the documentation completed in their AIRE file.

This estimate is based on the time required to process the decision and resolution with other UPV services, once we know the available budget.

Erasmus - SEPIE financial support (EU funds) is guaranteed for all students with an assigned destination as long as:

  • The student submits on time all the documents associated with the financial aid in each phase of the mobility (before mobility, upon arrival at the destination, and after departure from the host institution), according to the instructions received through the AIRE website and by email.
  • The student's file must be included in the Resolution of Allocation of the Erasmus Mobility Spots 2025-2026, signed by the Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Communication. This is a first step only, as the call for the allocation of the spots available in each university does not include the mobility grant yet.
  • The student's file must be included in a Resolution of the "CALL FOR FINANCIAL AID FOR THE ERASMUS+ STUDENT MOBILITY PROGRAM (SMS) FOR THE 2025-2026 ACADEMIC YEAR". OPII will publish this resolution once we know the Erasmus EU budget allocated to UPV and how we can best distribute it.

(1) Starting in the 2024-25 academic year, the SEPIE (national Erasmus Agency) has authorized each Spanish university to establish freely the monthly amount of the grant (within a range), so the funding for students coming from different Spanish universities may receive different monthly amounts in the same host institution.

(2) Students traveling to Switzerland will generally receive their funding through their host institution, not through the UPV (grants from the Swiss-European Mobility Programme funded by the Swiss agency MOVETIA). All procedures and payment information are provided directly by the Swiss universities. The concept of additional funding for "students with fewer opportunities" does not exist in the Swiss government grants.

Funding through the UPV, as defined in the chart above, will only be allocated to specific students if the Swiss university states that it cannot allocate MOVETIA funding. In this case, the student must notify immediately the International Relations Office of their UPV School or Faculty.
(3) Students from certain pre-defined groups will receive an additional €250 per month. The groups of "students with fewer opportunities" included for the 2025-26 academic year are explained below.

ERASMUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT - SEPIE (EU FUNDS ) - TRAVEL GRANT

All participants will receive a travel grant, which is calculated based on the distance from their campus at the UPV (Alcoy, Gandía, Valencia) to the host university, using the European Commission's Distance Calculator for the Erasmus program:

DISTANCE TRAVEL GRANT
100 - 499 kms. 211 €
500 - 1999 kms. 309 €
2000 - 2999 kms. 395 €
3000 - 3999 kms 580 €
4000 - 7999 kms. 1188 €
8000 kms. or more 1735 €

The distance calculation is performed by the UPV, and payment of the grant is subject solely to arrival at the destination, regardless of the actual cost of travel expenses. Invoices are not required.

ERASMUS FINANCIAL SUPPORT (EU FUNDS) FOR "STUDENTS WITH FEWER OPPORTUNITIES"
(FINAL INFORMATION)

Students who submit one of the following documents (issued by the relevant Spanish public administration) will receive 250 € additional monthly funding:

  1. Scholarship award notification issued by the Spanish Ministry of Education or Basque Education Department for post-secondary education in the academic year 2024-2025.
  2. Document confirming refugee status
  3. Official certificate of disability min. 33% issued by the relevant agency of a Spanish Autonomous Community

This additional grant of 250€ per month is also European Union funds.

When and how do I have to submit any of these documents to receive the additional €250 per month for "students with fewer opportunities"?

You don't need to submit anything. In September, OPI will publish a resolution with the financial allocation for each student (you won't need to submit an application).

The provisional resolution will be made after consulting the databases of the UPV general Academic Services and verifying which students meet any of the requirements mentioned above. In this case, these students will be automatically assigned the additional aid.
Are there no additional funds (fewer opportunities) for students holding a card of "large family" or "single-parent household" as in previous years?

No, for budgetary reasons.

How and when are the payments received - SEPIE / European Union Funds

  • First payment (downpayment): when the student uploads a document confirming arrival at the host university, UPV will transfer 70% of the financial allocation and 100% of the travel grant.

The status of your file on the AIRE website must be "Incorporado Destino" (At host university). Check the sequence of states and the documents required in each step in this graphic
  • However, the payment process cannot begin until the UPV has published a resolution of allocation of the Erasmus 2025-26 funds it has received (expectedly in early September).
Only then will it be possible for UPV to upload the financial support on each file of the AIRE portal and then each student will have to download, sign and upload the Erasmus grant agreement.
In practice, students arriving at their host institution in August or September will likely have to wait until at least late October to receive the first payment, even if their online file on the AIRE portal has reached the correct status.
  • Settlement (after completing your mobility): When you finish your mobility and upload the final documents to AIRE, UPV staff will check the dates of your departure certificate and calculate the actual duration in months or proportional part, and then a settlement is made. If you are eligible to receive more money, we will send you a final payment (respecting the maximum number of months previously announced for a semester or a full-year scholarship).

As a requirement to receive the settlement payment, you must have previously answered a mandatory EU survey on participation in the Erasmus+ programme (Erasmus Participant Survey) and uploaded the summary PDF on your file of the AIRE portal.

EXAMPLE

The following examples are based on a theoretical maximum of 8 months of funding for stays lasting a full academic year.

Example: for a mobility of two semesters in Prague (general grant), we allocate a student 9 months x 300 € = 2400 €

2400€ is the maximum amount. The student. will only receive the full amount if s/he proves that the academic activity at the host university was at least 8 months (240 days or more).

Downpayment (first Instalment):

70% of 8 months of EU Grant - Full acad. year → 1680€
(70% of 8 months is 5,6 months)
100% travel grant (according to distance) to Prague 309 €

Settlement payment: (random example) the Erasmus departure certificate signed by the host university says that the actual duration of the student mobility was 8.8 months (random example) → the total grant amount that the student is eligible for is 8 months. In the downpayment, the student receives the missing amount :

2400 € months of EU Grant - Full year (8 months x 300€) - 1680 € already received

You will not receive monthly payments, and there are usually no other intermediate payments, unless the financial allocation of your scholarship changes: for example, your mobility changes from an initial duration of one semester to a full academic year, or you are awarded a complementary scholarship which was not initially assigned, or if we increase the maximum number of months of funding for a two-semester mobility if we have extra available budget due to drop-outs.

COMPLEMENTARY GRANTS OFFERED BY THE VALENCIAN REGIONAL GOVERNMENT (GENERALITAT VALENCIANA- GVA)
(FINAL INFORMATION)

The Valencia Regional Government (Generalitat Valencia) launches every year a call for applications with additional funds for students from Valencian universities going on Erasmus mobility (Erasmus mobility for studies - semester or full academic year).

So far, these grants have always been only for undergraduate (bachelor) students, and the allocation criteria are average grade and family income.

Students do not have to apply. The UPV will apply for the scholarship for all students (long-term mobility). If you are granted this additional scholarship, we will inform you by email (usually between November and December), we will add a new financial allocation line to your AIRE online file and you will receive an additional payment.
The GVA budget is small for the number of students who go on Erasmus from Valencian universities, so the percentage of beneficiaries is low. In 2024-2025, approximately 110 Erasmus students from the UPV were awarded this grant, out of more than 1,100 outgoing Erasmus students. GVA published the resolution in December 2024, and payments began in February.
The GVA call rules stipulated support for a maximum of 5 months in 2024-25, regardless of the actual duration of the mobility.

OTHER GRANTS (BANKS AND INSTITUTIONS...)

  • Banco Santander offered 118 1,000€ scholarships for students with an Erasmus mobility for 2025-2026 (long-term mobility for studies within Europe).
Students had to submit two applications in April (there will be no further calls):
1) Through the Banco Santander website. The application period was open until April 30, 2025.
2) Through an open call on AIRE: UPV personal intranet > International Relations and Cooperation. Applications were open from April 8 to 30, 2025.

The grants have already been allocated, and the resolution has been published. Those on the waiting list will be eligible to receive this funding if students with this additional grant cancel their mobility.

  • Some municipalities or Regional Governments offer grants for residents who are going on an Erasmus study mobility. In that case, you must submit an application yourself. We recommend that you consult their website to explore if there are any grants available.
