What is an Erasmus BIP (Blended Intensive Programme)?

They are short, intensive programs that use innovative ways of learning and teaching, including online collaborative work.

They aim to reach students from any field and level of studies and offer an opportunity for shorter international mobility to students who, for any reason, cannot or do not wish to undertake long-term mobility.

Each Erasmus BIP is organized by a consortium of at least 3 universities from 3 different countries. The UPV can be the coordinating institution and the host university or a partner of the consortium and the sending institution.

Erasmus BIP programs include challenge-based learning where transnational teams of students work together to tackle challenges or projects. Sometimes, work groups combine students from different areas of study to approach a project from different perspectives and they will have to learn to collaborate and complement each other.

With the support of teaching staff from the participating universities, the groups of students will work collaboratively as a team, combining a period of online work and a period of face-to-face work in which all students will travel to the country of the organizing university for mobility. short, usually a week. In most cases, students first work and learn online, and the face-to-face mobility period of a week is the closure of the project. In some cases, online activity can continue after the in-person work week.

Teaching and learning activities are different in each Erasmus BIP program. They may include:

- Online sessions to introduce teachers, present the objectives, and create workgroups
- "Ice-breaking" sessions between student groups
- Online meetings with all participants or in groups
- Individual autonomous work
- Work in transnational groups in person and virtually to achieve the proposed learning objectives and present a group result
- Presentation of the work/project/solution of each group to teachers and other participants.

The final result can be a presentation, a series of posters or graphic material, a video, a blog, a webpage, a computer tool or app, or a combination of several things. Each BIP is unique.

(I'm a student) It sounds interesting. How can I participate in a BIP Programme. When do I have to apply?

The UPV only supports and funds Erasmus BIP mobility programs that have been previously authorized and have a budget reserved by the OPII (International Exchange Programmes Office) after consultation with the responsible professor at the UPV or with the International Office of the supporting UPV School/Faculty.
No student mobility for an Erasmus BIP will be funded or endorsed if a student has applied directly to a BIP organized by another institution, without prior authorization from the UPV.
Erasmus BIP programs do not have a fixed schedule. There are several types of Erasmus BIPs.
  • BIPs that take place at the UPV: within the consortium of universities, the UPV is the coordinator and receives students from all the universities in the consortium in Spain for the in-person stay (usually one week).
They usually have a fairly specialized topic, and the coordinating professor of the BIP at the UPV can offer them to students from their School/Faculty, so they can join the group of international students in the online phase and the in-person phase at the UPV.
Dissemination will be done at the School or Faculty level: by email, posters, informational talks, etc. It is not published on the OPII website.
  • BIPs that take place outside the UPV: the coordinating university is located in another country and is usually the venue for the in-person week. These include the active participation of a UPV professor, involved in the design and teaching of the program.
They usually have a fairly specialized topic, and the coordinating professor of the BIP at the UPV normally directs the selection of UPV students, sometimes with support from the International Office of their center.
Dissemination will be done at the School or Faculty level: by email, posters, informational talks, etc. It is not published on the OPII website.
Once the selection is made, the professor will communicate the list of selected candidates to the OPII, who will send instructions for applying for financial aid.
  • BIPs of the European Alliance of Universities ENHANCE: The coordinating and receiving university is one of the 10 universities in the European Alliance of Universities ENHANCE, of which the UPV is a member.
Professors from several universities in the Alliance typically participate, and the students are also from this group of universities. The topics are grouped into one of these categories:
- Climate Change Action
- Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence
- Gender and Diversity
- Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Others
You can find the Erasmus BIPs offered by the ENHANCE Alliance on this website:
ENHANCE Alliance Catalog of Innovative Training Offers
(filter by "Summer and Winter Schools").

The catalogue is updated 4 times a year.
Each coordinating university consults with the UPV to determine whether it will be able to fund Erasmus BIP grants for each activity, and how many. If so, the organizing university selects the students and communicates the list to the OPI, which will send instructions to the students for applying for the financial aid.
