As part of the ENHANCE Alliance, which brings together ten European technological universities to promote innovation in education, research, and knowledge transfer, the AI Human-Oriented Living Lab was held on July 2 and 3 at the Berlin University of Technology. This initiative, which is part of the work package Transdisciplinary Lab for Societal Transformation (WP6), aims to promote people-centred artificial intelligence through collaboration among researchers, institutions, and society, fostering transdisciplinary research and the development of solutions with social impact.

A doctoral student from the Institute of Design and Manufacturing (IDF) from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, alongside researchers from ENHANCE’s partner universities. Following two preparatory workshops held online, the in-person sessions focused on a co-creation process to define a shared vision of a participatory artificial intelligence laboratory as a knowledge infrastructure. Through methodologies of design thinkingThrough collaborative dynamics and the creation of a collective metaphor for the “landscape” of the future laboratory, participants explored new ways to integrate AI into society from an open, inclusive, and common-good-oriented perspective.

The program will also include visits to the CityLAB Berlin, a leader in the city’s digital transformation and urban development, and at the innovation lab at the Berlin University of Technology, where attendees learned about applied innovation initiatives and discussed possible avenues for collaboration. The meeting concluded with the identification of next steps to consolidate an international research network, share best practices in participatory artificial intelligence, and lay the groundwork for future joint proposals within the ENHANCE framework.
