Introduction

Mechatronics Engineering represents the fusion of technologies such as control, mechanics, electricity, electronics and computer science that enable the engineering challenges posed by new intelligent machines to be addressed. It is a natural choice to explain a process whose purpose, since its origin, has been the creation of advanced products and engineering systems that are inextricably linked by the synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic, control and computer technologies.

This term was coined by the Japanese industry in the 1970s - when the first industrial robots were developed - and among its immediate antecedents, is research in the area of cybernetics, numerical control machines, manipulators and programmable logic controllers. Today, robotics has come to be considered a generic term and yet, from a formal point of view, it could be considered a subset of Mechatronics. In many respects, Mechatronics is heir to the so-called 'Electromechanical Systems' or 'Automation and Control Systems'.

Objectives

The main objective of the Master's Degree in Mechatronics Engineering is to offer students comprehensive training in Mechatronics Engineering, including the analysis, design and implementation of mechatronic systems in industrial environments. That these students acquire a capacity for development, and even research, in Mechatronics Engineering and in the methodologies and technologies that will allow the creation of products and engineering systems defined by the synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic, electrical, control and computer technologies.

The professional interest of the proposed degree is due to the growing need of companies to recruit engineers with a multidisciplinary profile. Companies often complain about the over-specialisation of engineers and the effort they have to invest in training them. Graduates of this degree could improve production processes, eliminating inefficiencies and increasing competitiveness. Mechatronic Engineers are distinguished by their inventiveness and originality, their ability to lead interdisciplinary teams, their entrepreneurial and leadership skills, and their ability to adapt creatively to change. Mechatronic Engineers have a high sense of organisation that generates a high capacity for analysis and synthesis, which leads them to transform their knowledge and the physical elements at their disposal into intelligent instruments.

Aimed at

Graduates, Engineers or graduates of the following official degrees, Degree in Automatic and Electronic Engineering, Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Degree in Electrical Engineering, Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Degree in Industrial Engineering (all orientations), Degree in Automatic and Electronic Industrial Engineering, Degree in Industrial Technical Engineering. Candidates with other related degrees may also be admitted to the master's degree if, in the opinion of the academic committee, they demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the following areas: Automation, Mechanics, Electronics and Computer Science as well as Physical Fundamentals (Electricity and Mechanics) and Mathematical Fundamentals.

Admission criteria

In accordance with the regulations governing access to official master's degree courses set out in Article 16 of Royal Decree 861/2010, of 2 July, which amends Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, which establishes the organisation of official university courses, in order to gain access to official master's degree courses it is necessary to hold an official Spanish university degree or another issued by a higher education institution belonging to another member state of the European Higher Education Area which entitles access to master's degree courses in that country.

Likewise, graduates from educational systems outside the European Higher Education Area may be admitted without the need to have their degrees recognised, subject to verification by the University that they accredit a level of training equivalent to the corresponding official Spanish university degrees and that they are recognised in the country issuing the degree for access to postgraduate studies. Access by this route does not imply, in any case, the validation of the previous degree held by the interested party, nor its recognition for purposes other than that of studying for the master's degree.
